Netflix is developing a new series based on the works of Philip K. Dick, and it feels like a natural successor to one of the most acclaimed science fiction films ever made.
Netflix offers a lot of science fiction content, but lately, it hasn’t been taking as many risks with its sci-fi shows and movies. While Apple TV is still creating groundbreaking sci-fi, Netflix has mostly stuck to safer choices following the popularity of shows like Stranger Things.
Netflix is set to release a new sci-fi series that might break the current trend of limited options for fans of the genre. The show, called The Future Is Ours, is based on Philip K. Dick’s lesser-known novel, The World Jones Made. If the series stays true to the book’s ideas, it could be a great follow-up to films like Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival.
Netflix’s Upcoming Philip K. Dick Adaptation Can Be The Perfect Followup To Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival
Netflix’s upcoming series, The Future is Ours, is inspired by Philip K. Dick’s The World Jones Made, much like Denis Villeneuve’s film Arrival drew inspiration from Ted Chiang’s Story of Your Life. Although these two projects come from different sources, they share compelling similarities. In both, the main character learns to see time as a circle, not a simple progression from past to future.
In the film Arrival, Amy Adams’ character, Dr. Louise, learns to understand an alien language that allows her to perceive time in a non-linear way – experiencing the past, present, and future simultaneously. The main character in The World Jones Made gains a similar ability, being able to see a year into the future. For both characters, this power proves to be a mixed blessing, bringing both advantages and difficulties.
These characters can foresee major events, even disasters, long before they happen. But, despite knowing what’s coming, they can’t alter the course of history. Both stories explore the idea of fate versus free will, prompting viewers to wonder if our choices truly matter if the future is already set.
Similar to the movie Arrival, the book The World Jones Made features aliens as a key part of the story, using them to examine how humans understand time and deal with the unknown. However, the upcoming Netflix series will reportedly move away from the alien storyline and incorporate new, original ideas instead of closely following the Philip K. Dick novel.
I’m really intrigued by Netflix’s new series, The Future Is Ours. From what I’ve heard, it’s going to explore the lasting effects of environmental issues, and that actually reminds me a bit of Arrival. I don’t expect it to reach the same artistic heights as Denis Villeneuve’s film – that would be a tall order! – but it sounds like a really welcome addition to what Netflix has to offer, and I’m definitely planning to check it out.
The Future Is Ours Can Become Netflix’s Next Big Sci-Fi Hit
During the 2010s, Netflix offered a lot of really innovative and thought-provoking sci-fi shows, including titles like Dark, Travelers, Sense8, and The OA. But as Stranger Things became more popular, Netflix appeared to shift its focus, investing less in these complex, original dramas. While you can still find some intricate sci-fi adaptations on Netflix, like 3 Body Problem, the platform now generally favors more widely appealing and safer sci-fi choices.
Netflix has a chance to break new ground with its adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s The World Jones Made, but only if it stays true to the source material’s complex look at the emotional toll of predicting the future.
The new adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s work looks good, especially considering the team behind it successfully adapted popular and well-regarded stories like One Hundred Years of Solitude and The Eternaut.
We’re hoping the new sci-fi show on Netflix lives up to expectations and is as impressive as classic films like Arrival.
