Dan Walker’s accuser claims Channel 5 tried to hide ‘toxic culture of misogyny and racism’

A woman who previously accused TV presenter Dan Walker of sexism, mistreatment, and bullying is now alleging that Channel 5 has a racist work environment.

Next week, Claudia-Liza Vanderpuije, 47, will go to a four-day legal hearing in London where she’ll be facing off against her previous colleague, Dan Walker, regarding employment matters.

Ms. Vanderpuije is filing claims against Walker, 49, as well as ITN (the producer of Channel 5 News) and its parent company, Paramount.

The former BBC Breakfast host denies all the allegations.

On Sunday, Jonathan Coad, the lawyer for Ms. Vanderpuije, released a statement on her behalf. Coad previously represented Phillip Schofield, the former BBC presenter who faced controversy.

Claudia-Liza believes she was unfairly made redundant after reporting serious issues within the Channel 5 Newsroom. She claims she raised concerns about a harmful environment characterized by racism, sexism, bullying, and a bias reflected in the news content, and that this reporting led to her job loss.

She claims that ITN and Channel 5 attempted to conceal a racist environment within Channel 5 News, and that they knowingly allowed it to continue, violating their legal duties.

Because of the upcoming trial, Claudia-Liza isn’t allowed to discuss her accusations publicly at this time.

After leaving Channel 5 in 2023 following five years as a news presenter – including the last year co-hosting with Walker – Ms. Vanderpuije has shared her claims.

The father of three, who is married, strongly denies the accusations against him. He’s collected over 50 statements from people who can vouch for his character, including professional athletes, Olympic competitors, BBC staff, and coworkers.

According to a source, Dan strongly refutes accusations of sexism, misogyny, racism, or bullying, which have been circulating for several years.

‘Nobody wants this but he will be there to tell the judge the truth.

We’ll have a lot of statements from people describing Dan’s good character. He’s been amazed by how many people are willing to vouch for him.

‘He has been stunned and actually very upset to be accused of such things.’

In April 2024, Walker, a deeply religious man, was fully cleared of wrongdoing after an investigation into claims of serious misconduct at his workplace.

People involved in the investigation say there wasn’t enough proof to back up the allegations, and former Strictly Come Dancing contestant Walker fully cooperated with the inquiry.

This investigation stemmed from complaints made by Ms. Vanderpuije, but none of them were proven true.

In 2024, Walker stated that the matter had been thoroughly investigated and he was completely cleared by an impartial review.

Neither Walker nor Ms. Vanderpuije would offer a statement. ITN stated they completely deny the claim and will be addressing it through the formal tribunal process.
