As a big movie fan, I was really disappointed to hear about the issues at BAFTA after the awards show. It’s good to see the organization is finally taking steps to fix things – they’ve said they’re looking at how accessible their events are, how well they plan for inclusion, the overall culture, and how they communicate everything. It took a while, but it’s a start, especially after that awful incident overshadowed everything.
An independent review of the incident at the British Academy Film and Television Arts awards found problems with BAFTA’s planning and how it handles crises. During the ceremony on February 22nd, a member of the audience with Tourette syndrome used a racial slur while actors Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were on stage. BAFTA and the BBC were criticized – and have since apologized – for broadcasting the event with the slur still audible, despite a two-hour delay.
The university’s board of trustees released a statement on Friday regarding the February incident. An external review conducted by RISE Associates found no evidence that anyone involved intended to cause harm. The board again apologized to both the Black and disability communities. The individual who used the racial slur has been identified as John Davidson, a campaigner with Tourette syndrome from Scotland. He is also the executive producer and subject of the award-winning film “I Swear.”
Entertainment & Arts
BAFTA has apologized to Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo, stars of ‘Sinners,’ after a viewer with Tourette syndrome unintentionally shouted a racial slur during the live broadcast on Sunday.
BAFTA’s board admitted they hadn’t met their diversity and inclusion targets and didn’t fully consider how a problem could affect a live event. According to RISE, BAFTA failed to act on initial concerns and a lack of clear leadership made it difficult to handle the situation effectively.
RISE stated that the incident and its aftermath demonstrate that current systems weren’t strong enough to handle a live broadcast in today’s world.
The board announced a three-step plan on Friday to fix its weaknesses. This includes streamlining how issues are raised and dealt with, improving communication, and identifying any internal issues that are hindering its progress on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
The statement ended by saying they are committed to understanding what went wrong and making sure everyone truly feels included and like they belong.
Honestly, the whole thing blew up after that moment. Davidson had to apologize, and then stories started coming out about how the BBC actually managed to hide another offensive word. There were even people shouting “Free Palestine” before the show aired! Plus, I heard Warner Bros., the studio behind the film, had a really awkward meeting with the BBC to try and sort everything out. It was a mess, to say the least.
Awards
Michael B. Jordan received the Best Actor Oscar for his performance playing both Smoke and Stack in the film ‘Sinners,’ which earned an unprecedented 16 nominations.
For Jordan and Lindo, stars of “Sinners,” the NAACP Image Awards provided a welcome sense of community and boosted the film’s awards prospects, coming less than a week after the BAFTAs and offering a respite from recent controversy.
Lindo expressed gratitude for the support received following the events of last weekend. Speaking at the Image Awards, she said it was a privilege to be with everyone and described the situation as turning something potentially bad into a positive outcome.
I was so thrilled to see Jordan win at the Oscars! He had an amazing night, first taking home Entertainer of the Year, and then the Best Actor award at the 98th Academy Awards. His acceptance speech was really moving – his first Oscar, and he dedicated it to the Black actors who paved the way for him, naming legends like Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, and Halle Berry. It was a powerful moment, recognizing the shoulders he stood on.
I’m incredibly grateful for all the support I’ve received from everyone here and watching at home throughout my career. I truly feel it. Knowing you all believe in me motivates me to keep improving and to deliver – I want to make you proud, and I promise to continue pushing myself.
