The US Treasury Department is basically doing the “I didn’t do it” dance 💃, claiming a lawsuit over its sanctions of Tornado Cash is just *over* 🙄. Apparently, because they dropped the crypto mixer from the sanctions list (like, finally!), there’s no need for a proper court judgment.

Remember back in 2022 when they sanctioned Tornado Cash for allegedly helping North Korean hackers launder money? Yeah, that was a whole thing 😬. Tornado Cash users sued the Treasury, and after a bit of back and forth, the court ruled in favor of Tornado Cash. So, Treasury, like the good little government agency it is, said “oops, my bad” and removed Tornado Cash from the sanctions list.

But now they’re saying “case closed! 🔚” because, you know, they un-sanctioned it. Like, that’s totally how this works, right? Not so fast, says Paul Grewal, Coinbase’s chief legal officer. He’s all “hold your horses, Treasury! You can’t just *poof* away a lawsuit like a magic trick.” 🪄

He points out that the Treasury needs to prove they won’t re-sanction Tornado Cash, because, you know, they might. And the last thing we need is another round of crypto drama.

So, the battle rages on, even though the Treasury is acting like it’s all over. Coinbase and some Tornado Cash users are still fighting for a proper judgment, because, well, justice.

Meanwhile, the founders of Tornado Cash are facing their own legal troubles. Roman Storm is out on bail, Roman Semenov is on the FBI’s most wanted list, and Alexey Pertsev is fighting his money laundering conviction.

Talk about a messy situation.
