How to fish in Monster Hunter Wilds
Following some short gameplay (approximately less than a few hours), you’ll be able to access the fishing rod and additional tools such as binoculars in Monster Hunter Wilds. To initiate fishing, pick the fishing rod from your inventory menu. Position yourself close to a water source and press L2/LT to aim, then tap R2 to throw out the line. Once you’ve equipped the fishing rod, use the up or down buttons on the directional pad to choose bait (once it’s unlocked).
After you’ve thrown your fishing line, the movements shown on the upper right corner of the screen, whether it’s the reel or jig action, play a crucial role. For certain fish, you might need to quickly or slowly reel in your line for them to get interested in the bait. Begin by moving your lure slowly using the left analog stick first.
After the fish takes the bait, your controller will vibrate, or you’ll notice the fish actually biting too. For regular or smaller fish, pressing R2 (for PlayStation) or RT (for Xbox) will pull them in.
Where to fish in Monster Hunter Wilds
If you see fish silhouettes or large shadows in any water bodies, you can fish there.
Which is the best place to fish in Monster Hunter Wilds
In my guides, I recommend Area 8: Underground Lake if you’re aiming to find Goldenfish or catch the Grand Escunite. For those seeking larger catches like whoppers or the Goliath Squid, Area 17: Great Lake Shore is ideal. This area offers numerous fishing spots along its shoreline. Be sure to explore the entire shore so you can easily identify the bigger fish among the schools of smaller ones.
What time and environment to fish at in Monster Hunter Wilds
As a gamer, I find that if I’m aiming for big catches like Tuna, the ideal moment is early in the morning. So, I usually take a break and wait patiently until then to maximize my chances of reeling in those whoppers!

Uncommon sea creatures such as the Goliath Squid, Grand Escunite, or Goldenfish need special lures and a lot of persistence. The goal is to complete Kanya’s fishing side quest line not only to advance through all the missions in the game, but also to gain access to superior bait that will aid you in fishing more broadly. Additionally, remember that rare fish often have specific prerequisites like weather and time of day, so be mindful of these factors.
What is a whopper in Monster Hunter Wilds
In simpler terms, a ‘whopper’ refers to a big fish. Unlike smaller fish that get caught immediately upon biting the bait or hook, catching a whopper requires you to actively participate in the fishing mini-game instead of it happening automatically.
How to catch a whopper in Monster Hunter Wilds
In Monster Hunter Wilds, catching those elusive whoppers requires patience above all else. It’s normal to make mistakes initially, but don’t be disheartened; practice truly does make perfect. I myself found it challenging at first, but after catching four of them, the process became second nature and I earned the trophy for catching 30 in under an hour. Initially, focus on following the instructions that appear on your screen. If the fish swims left, move your lure to the left; if it moves right, adjust your lure accordingly.
To catch this creature, keep tracking its actions until it tires out. At that point, promptly wiggle the left joystick up and down to pull it in, but remember it may leap from the water too. In such instances, adjust the joystick in the direction it leaps and hit the ‘restrain’ button (R2 or RT on your controller).

It’s best to keep your fishing line clear of obstacles or rocks when casting your lure. This is because a big fish may swim too close to these barriers, potentially causing you to miss it if it moves too far off course. Remember, patience is key in fishing.
If you’re having trouble spotting the fish swimming amidst a crowd of other fish causing a lot of commotion, try focusing on the fin that breaks the surface of the water instead. By doing so, you can more easily follow its movement rather than relying on the fish’s silhouette or shadow. This simplifies the process significantly.
How to catch 30 whoppers and unlock the A-fish-ionado trophy in Monster Hunter Wilds
To obtain the A-fish-ionado trophy and achievement in Monster Hunter Wilds, you must catch 30 large whoppers. If you’ve been progressing through Kanya’s quest line, you may have already caught a few, but your goal is to catch a total of 30. To unlock it, head to Area 17: Great Lake Shore. Wait until morning and then stroll along the shoreline. You will notice several fish-filled pools with Gastronome Tuna swimming within them.
Typically, I manage to net around three to four Gastronome Tuna fish during each break here, and I can earn the A-fish-ionado trophy and achievement in less than an hour. While you may encounter larger fish such as the Gajau here, they prove more challenging to reel in. My suggestion would be to focus on catching Gastronome Tuna fish for the most straightforward and effortless approach to unlocking the A-fish-ionado trophy and achievement in Monster Hunter Wilds.
How to catch the most fish without being interrupted in Monster Hunter Wilds
In different fishing locations and times, you might encounter monsters appearing. To deal with such creatures, like the Uth Duna which could show up in Area 17: Great Lake Shore, you can either wear the Ghillie Mantle or use a big dung pod. Additionally, I suggest ensuring your camp is accessible at Area 17 within the Scarlet Forest. This camp will prove extremely helpful for all your fishing endeavors.
