Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2’s March patch brings zoomer haircuts for Henry and the return of the hardcore mode that can kill you before the game even starts
Initially, I believed I appreciated Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. In fact, I went as far as awarding it a 90% in our review, and even derived a fresh game design theory from its mechanics. However, upon further play, I realize my initial enthusiasm was misguided. Unfortunately, the game turned out to be nearly unplayable for me due to one crucial detail: the absence of an option to give Henry a mullet.
Luckily, Warhorose acknowledges its significant historical mistake and plans to add a customizable hairstyle feature to the game in an upcoming March update, as demonstrated in a recent Twitch stream by KCD2 lead designer Prokop Jirsa and PR manager Tobias Stolz-Zwilling. In this update, players will have the option to give Henry a modern haircut.
Initially, character Henry in KCD1 could alter his mother’s boy haircut and scruffy beard at various bathhouses introduced by Bohemia during the 1.4 update. However, this customization option was not available when KCD2 first launched.
It appears Warhorse was saving it for a special occasion, as it turned out later. In the Twitch broadcast, Stolz-Zwilling and Jirsa displayed an impressive variety of hair and beard styles for Henry’s character, ranging from sleek undercuts to lavish bouffants.
As a fan, I can’t help but favor the ‘brawler’ hairdo, often referred to as Zoomer do. It’s not that I find it aesthetically pleasing, but there’s an uncanny resemblance to Henry preparing to film TikToks, where he casually inquires about people’s bodycount from passersby.
This month isn’t just about the Bohemian hairstyles; we’ve also got something exciting lined up for March. It’s the highly-anticipated introduction of a challenging, KCD1-inspired hardcore mode to the game. If you’re new here, this mode will make Henry’s journey even more engaging and immersive than before.
Initially, prepare to bid farewell to swift transportation methods. Additionally, forget about cardinal directions on your map or knowing your exact location. Navigating is all about deciphering your surroundings using landmarks and then devising a plan to reach your destination. It’s quite challenging, if I may say so myself.
Moreover, not only do you have an opportunity to enhance the challenge in this game, but you can also choose from various undesirable characteristics for Henry at the beginning. For instance, he could suffer from a bad back, become a sleepwalker, or have a disadvantage when it comes to speech checks due to being ‘bashful’. If you dared to activate every single negative trait in King’s Courtier 1 and still emerged victorious, you would receive a unique achievement as a reward for your bravery (or perhaps foolishness). Does this proposition intrigue me? Indeed, it does, for I am quite the daredevil.
I particularly enjoyed the authenticity of KCD1’s hardcore mode, as it would even end your character during the creation process. If you opted for a hardcore game, there was a high likelihood that you’d encounter a ‘You have perished’ message, detailing the factors leading to your untimely death in a ruthless medieval setting. You might find yourself restarting the game numerous times just to reach the character-creation stage. This level of difficulty truly embodied the term ‘hardcore’.
There’s some uncertainty about whether the unique feature from the hardcore mode of King’s Cave 1 will reappear when KCD2 is released this month, but I really hope it does. That odd, uncommon, and distinctive element Warhorse created truly enhances the game. Features like that just make it even more outstanding.
1. Utilizing cheats for KCD2 console commands
2. Discovering every loot spot in KCD2 treasure maps
3. Acquiring a free horse in KCD2
4. Saving your game frequently with KCD2’s Saviour Schnapps
5. Exploring romance options available in Bohemian ‘romantasy’ within KCD2
