Monster Hunter Wilds Shatters Steam Records, Surpassing Valve’s Biggest Titles!
There’s no denying that Monster Hunter Wilds has made a big splash in the gaming world. Based on the number of players on Steam, it’s already sold more than a few million copies. In fact, it’s becoming so popular that it’s threatening to dethrone some of Steam’s top-played games, even those developed by Valve.
Beyond simply surpassing the world record of 334,000 concurrent players held by other games, the number of players for Wilds transcends the boundaries even of the popular Monster Hunter series.
On Steam, Monster Hunter Rise is rapidly climbing the ranks to become a top-tier title, boasting an impressive first-day player count of over 1.3 million. Notably, it has outperformed heavyweights such as Marvel’s Avengers and Cyberpunk 2077, but what truly sets it apart is this: It has managed to surpass the player numbers usually associated with Valve’s games, a feat that few other titles have ever achieved.
Although surpassing the all-time peak of Counter-Strike remains elusive, it’s worth noting that this title has managed to outshine Valve’s another popular free-to-play game, DOTA 2. Interestingly, only five other games on Steam have accomplished a similar feat.
Monster Hunter Wilds passes one of Valve’s biggest games
Dota 2 remains among the most significant competitive video games globally, featuring substantial prizes within the esports community and a sizable fanbase that generally tends to keep their own circle.
It’s unlikely that it will surpass its current record of 1,295,114, which establishes it as a significant milestone for earning a place in the Steam Hall of Fame. And indeed, Monster Hunter World has achieved this feat.
According to Steamdb data, Monster Hunter Wilds has surpassed both Dota 2 and Lost Ark (a free-to-play game) to become the fifth most popular game played on Steam.

Currently, when I’m typing this, the game is running a close second for most simultaneously played games on Steam, trailing just behind Counter-Strike 2. It’s challenging to surpass Counter-Strike 2 given its status as Valve’s current gem and one of the largest competitive games globally.
In a striking demonstration of its success, the monumental achievement reached with Wilds’ launch strongly suggests its popularity, given that it’s playable on consoles. Although console user data isn’t publicly disclosed like Steam’s, it’s highly probable that Monster Hunter World’s peak daily players surpassed those of Counter-Strike 2 on the day of its release.
