Monster Hunter Wilds Breaks Steam Records in Just Hours!
Summary
- Monster Hunter Wilds hits 1.3M peak Steam players in 9 hours, second only to CS: GO.
- Despite the success, the game has “mixed” ratings on Steam due to optimization issues.
- It ranks fourth on the PS store, showing higher aggregate player engagement vs. Steam.
The action-adventure game, “Monster Hunter Wilds“, is breaking records on Steam as it swiftly surpassed a million simultaneous players within just six hours of its launch. As the first installment in this beloved series in more than seven years, Monster Hunter Wilds was one of the most eagerly awaited game releases when it dropped on February 28, 2025 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
In 2018, Capcom’s release of Monster Hunter World marked their most successful game to date, both commercially and critically. The action RPG garnered widespread praise and multiple awards. This outstanding achievement sparked immense anticipation for its successor, Monster Hunter Rise, announced in December 2023. When the developers held the open beta testing, which commenced in October 2024 on Steam, a massive influx of Monster Hunter fans joined in. With the game’s official release, that number has swelled even more, quickly surpassing one million within a short timeframe.
Currently, Monster Hunter Wilds has set a new record on Steam with a staggering 1,305,812 simultaneous players within just nine hours, according to data from SteamDB. This makes it the second most-played game on Steam ever, outshone only by the massive multiplayer first-person shooter, Counter-Strike 2, which boasts a peak of over 1.8 million users. Additionally, Monster Hunter Wilds has claimed the top spot among Steam’s highest-grossing titles in terms of revenue upon its release. Interestingly, Monster Hunter World, which joined Valve’s platform more than six months after its console debut, never managed to reach a concurrent player count as high as 1,305,812 during its peak popularity, peaking at only 334.6K players.
Monster Hunter Wilds Peak Concurrent Player Count on Steam
- 1,305,812 Steam players
As a dedicated fan, I can attest that it’s no surprise to see Monster Hunter Rise thriving more on platforms like PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Unlike Steam, these consoles don’t provide access to player engagement stats as we know them. Yet, the staggering concurrent player count is a testament to the game’s popularity. This theory is further supported by Capcom’s latest release holding the fourth spot among the top 10 games on the US PS Store, demonstrating its widespread appeal.
The rapid success of Monster Hunter Wilds on Steam is undeniably notable, yet it’s challenging to use the same term for its reviews on the platform. Currently, it holds a “Mixed” overall rating, based on evaluations from 9,017 players. Interestingly, only about 47% of these player reviews are favorable, apparently due to some optimization problems that have been pointed out by those who gave it a negative rating. As the developers of Monster Hunter Wilds typically address such issues through regular updates, there’s a chance that the game’s Steam rating may enhance in the future.
