In Monster Hunter Wilds, Xu Wu is a monstrous creature with numerous tentacles. These tentacles can inflict massive damage on the hunter, and they’re also adept at launching sharp objects as projectiles. You often come across the first Xu Wu during the game’s storyline. However, it’s essential to always stay ready for your future encounter with this beastly foe.
In this walkthrough, we’ll discuss battling Xu Wu within Monster Hunter Wilds, along with helpful strategies for engaging in this combat encounter.
Xu Wu Overview
In the third chapter of the game, around halfway through, you’ll come across Xu Wu – a formidable adversary resembling an octopus in appearance. Its design is reminiscent of a real-world octopus, and its size and strength are impressive enough to pose a threat even to guardian creatures.
The creature has the ability to stiffen the mucus produced by its tentacles, which it then thrusts powerfully towards the player. Beneath its body, you may observe a sizable orifice that serves as the beast’s mouth.
How To Unlock Xu Wu in Monster Hunter Wilds?
In Chapter 3, called “Full Circle”, you’ll come across Xu Wu. During this quest, you’ll need to track a monster as it shifts from one location to another. After you successfully defeat the creature, there will be a brief pause before Xu Wu resurfaces again. When he does, you’ll receive a screen notification about his reappearance.
Where To Find Xu Wu
To advance through the game, make sure you move forward with the campaign until you unlock Chapter 3 and expose the Wyveria area on your game map. This is the part of the game where Xu Wu resides.

Xu Wu Weaknesses
As a gamer, I’ve noticed Xu Wu takes a beating when hit with ice elemental damage. To make the best of the situation, I’d recommend crafting a weapon that packs an icy punch. If for some reason I can’t rely on ice attacks, I can fall back on fire, thunder, and water-based attacks, but they won’t inflict as much damage as ice. An alternative strategy would be to apply the poison status effect to Xu Wu since it seems particularly susceptible to this ailment.
Xu Wu’s Elemental Weaknesses
- Ice
- Water
- Thunder
- Fire
Xu Wu’s Status Weaknesses
- Poison
- Paralysis
- Blastblight
Instead of using dragon-attacks due to their negligible effect on the beast, focus more on ice-themed abilities and poisonous weapons for a successful fight in this encounter.
Xu Wu Weak Points
For attacking the vulnerable areas of the monster, aim directly for its head and maw. Additionally, consider detaching its two front limbs. If your attacks are precise, you should be able to sever the rest of its four tentacles.
If you successfully shatter the beast’s initial pair of arms first, it will lose its capacity to wield the sharp blades attached to those limbs. Furthermore, be vigilant and target the monster’s mouth whenever it is exposed, as this is a weak spot when it seems vulnerable.

How To Beat Xu Wu in Monster Hunter Wilds
To overcome Xu Wu in combat, it’s crucial to grasp and respond effectively to its assorted assaults. Be vigilant for four distinct types of attacks. The initial attack is when the creature slams its tentacle onto the ground, causing it to whip around the surface. When this occurs, swiftly maneuver behind the beast and launch a rapid series of counterattacks.
As a gamer, if I spot Xu Wu leaping towards me, I know for certain he’s gearing up to rain down some pointy weapons my way. To dodge those damaging spikes, I gotta swiftly move in the same direction Xu Wu has jumped.
When Xu Wu gobbles up the hunter whole, it’s a devastating move that drastically decreases my health. As soon as you spot its mouth, aim for the red mark with your slinger’s frostpods. This vulnerable area inflicts massive damage on the monster and momentarily stuns it.
When the monster charges towards the hunter, revealing its maw, it’s a sign of danger. In such instances, quickly mount your Stealth Ride and escape to a location where the monster won’t be able to spot you.
After thwarting every one of its actions, be sure to launch ice assaults for optimum harm. Additionally, disable its front legs to drastically reduce its capacity to slam and impale you. Utilize any injuries you observe on its body to hasten the end of the fight. Also, concentrate your attacks on its more vulnerable areas while evading incoming blows.
If the beast proves too formidable for me, I can always send out a distress signal, and kind-hearted fellow gamers will swoop in to lend a helping hand!
