‘It runs awful. It looks awful’: Monster Hunter Wilds performance issues put a dampener on its record-breaking concurrents as it settles into an early Mixed rating on Steam
Despite having invested over 100 hours into Monster Hunter Worlds, I must admit that my gaming setup, though decent, and an upgrade to my CPU, even after starting the game, have not prevented it from running sluggishly. This appears to be a widespread complaint among the game’s negative Steam reviews as well. Initially following its launch, the game’s positive ratings dipped below 50%, classifying it as ‘Mixed’.
Issues such as frequent crashes, suboptimal performance, stuttering, and low framerates are prevalent in numerous negative reviews about this game currently. The top negative review states, “This game is fantastic—yet has the poorest optimization I’ve ever encountered.” The user acknowledges that modern games require upgrades due to increasing demands, but finds it unacceptable in this case. They are aware that new games often struggle with poor performance at launch, as was the case with World, but they find it hard to excuse at this point.
One critic asserted they had a powerful system boasting a 3080 Super graphics card and good CPU, but struggled to play the game at a reasonable frame rate. Another user stated that the performance was extremely poor given the game’s visual appeal, performing worse than the beta version, and dropped from 60-70 FPS on high settings to 50 FPS on medium with discernible drops.
In this revised sentence, I aimed to preserve the original meaning while making it more natural and easy to read by rephrasing some phrases, such as “sporting” for “having,” “absolutely atrocious” for “extremely poor,” “Runs even worse than the beta” for “performed worse than the beta version,” “down to 50 FPS on medium” for “dropped from 60-70 FPS on high settings down to 50 FPS on medium,” and “with noticeable dips” for “with discernible drops.
The game seems far from impressive, considering the level of performance it requires. It’s as if the graphics were lifted directly from a PS3 title, with an overall gritty texture. Given that I can smoothly run Red Dead 2 and Cyberpunk on their highest settings, it’s disheartening to see this game struggle in comparison. It’s almost embarrassing.
The balance between the game’s performance and graphics is frequently under fire, as evidenced by another unfavorable review stating: “This game experiences unprecedented performance problems. It runs terribly. Its visuals are disappointing. It unexpectedly crashes. It suddenly freezes. It refuses to start on Windows, claiming an RTX 4070 is not compatible. Even the open beta version could initially load.
Here are some things reviewers said ran better than Monster Hunter Wilds:
- Kingdom Come Deliverance 2
- Their grandma
- Their air fryer
As an enthusiast, I’ve come across numerous comments expressing frustration about the game crashing, making it impossible to play. Additionally, some fellow fans have voiced concerns about the game being overly easy or shared their dissatisfaction with Capcom’s outdated practice of using paid DLC for character customization options, which they feel should be accessible once a hunter has been created.
Without a doubt, not every critique about the game’s performance is entirely fair. For instance, one Steam reviewer praised the gameplay as “the best yet in any MH game,” complimenting the solid storyline, entertaining characters, and the exceptional job done by the design team. They even noted that almost every armor set looks like high-tier gear! Another reviewer recommended Wilds highly, describing it as a significant advancement for the MH series. They appreciated the polishing of rough edges, improved onboarding for new players, and exciting weapon updates.
However, positive remarks about the gameplay can sometimes be found amidst all the jokes and misleading reviews. Even some of these still acknowledged that the game requires optimization.

It’s truly unfortunate to witness so many hardware troubles that players are experiencing, and I’m not an exception to it. Currently, my frame rate dips between 20-30 frames per second even in base camps, and I’ve come across more frame drops while responding to SOS flares than I experienced during the review phase.
Immersing myself in a solo game mode has significantly eased the strain on my system, which is unfortunate because I have to do it, but it could be a suitable substitute for now. Moreover, I can still send out distress signals and join them, as the game will momentarily place me in a temporary multiplayer setting before sending me back alone.
