In the game Monster Hunter Wilds, the Switch Axe may prove challenging to fully understand due to its intricate nature. Essentially, this weapon operates in two distinct modes, functioning like two separate weapons combined into one.

As a devoted hunter, mastering the art of wielding the Switch Axe promises some truly exhilarating and rewarding gameplay experiences. The combination of its potent damage and swift strike sequences makes it an exceptional choice for any adventure.

In this manual, you’ll find comprehensive information regarding the Switch Axe in Monster Hunter Wilds, including a detailed weapon description, optimal combo sequences, and crucial tips for mastering it.

Switch Axe Overview

The Switch Axe is a unique weapon capable of transforming into two distinct forms: Axe Mode and Sword Mode. In its Axe form, it offers extended range, while the Sword mode delivers quicker strikes and inflicts greater damage.

The Switch Axe includes three charge bars:

  • Orange Bar: Filled by destroying wounds with the Axe
  • Red Bar: Filled by attacking with the Sword.
  • Green Bar: This represents how long you can stay in Sword mode and is filled up by attacking in Axe Mode.

When aiming for high damage with the Switch Axe, focus on filling both the Orange and Red meters, while ensuring you don’t empty the Green meter.

You can achieve this by toggling through each setting. When both the Orange and Red indicators are fully charged, the sword inflicts significantly higher damage.

Best Switch Axe Combos

With the Switch Axe, players can execute impressive combo sequences that deal massive damage and even knock monsters off their feet.

Managing combos with the Switch Axe can be quite challenging, given that it functions as two different weapons. However, when you become proficient at transitioning between them, it proves to be one of the most effective weapons in the game.

We attached video examples of some of the best combos for the Switch Axe in the following sections.

At the top of each video, you can find the button inputs for each combo.

Wild Swing

Initially, there’s the Wild Swing combo. You perform it effortlessly by continually clicking the ‘circle’ button when you’re in Axe mode.

This action is simple to execute and particularly effective when the monster is down, enabling you to consistently inflict damage upon it before it manages to rise again.

Fade into Forward Slash

The Fade into Forward Slash technique is a clever strategy where you evade an incoming attack initially, followed by a swift counterattack aimed at taking advantage of the monster if its attack misses.

Timing this right will save you from getting hit, while also dealing high damage to the enemy.

Wild Swing into Heavy Slam

One of my favorite combos is the Wild Swing into Heavy Slam.

Keep tapping the circle button to perform a Wild Swing with your axe in Axe Mode. Following that, press the triangle button to drive the axe deep into the monster, potentially causing it to fall over.

Morph Slash into Elemental Overdrive

The strongest combo for the Switch Axe is Morph Slash into Elemental Overdrive.

When you completely charge up the meter, performing this attack will trigger a massive explosion causing considerable damage in the range of hundreds.

Sweep Slash

Lastly, we have the Sweep Slash combo.

This strategy is particularly beneficial for those aiming at various body areas of a creature, since it strikes multiple locations on the beast’s physique.

Tips for the Switch Axe

Understanding optimal Switch Axe combinations is a solid foundation, but here are some essential tactics for wielding this weapon in Monster Hunter Wilds that will significantly boost your effectiveness against its monstrous foes.

Let’s discuss some recommendations on how to become a better Switch Axe user.

The Majority of Hunts Should be in Axe Mode

Although Sword Mode offers a satisfying gameplay experience with increased damage, its usefulness is somewhat restricted and overly dependent on the Green Bar.

To ensure that your red bar stays full and your sword maintains high damage, it would be beneficial for you to activate Axe Mode when the Green Bar is nearly empty, which tends to occur frequently.

Continuously attack with the Axe to fill the Green Bar back up and then return to Sword form.

Use Decorations that Increase Switch Axe’s Strengths

The Switch Axe becomes exceptionally powerful when enhanced with appropriate accessories and sporting the right adornments.

By enhancing the weapon’s Explosion Attack (Elemental Overdrive), you can amplify the explosive power with the addition of a Blast Status. No monster in the game is immune to this Blast effect.

Regarding decorations, you’re looking for those that can boost both the rate of Blast accumulation and attack strength, as well as speed up the filling of the weapon gauge.

Below are my recommendations:

  • Blast Jewel: Increases the rate of blast buildup.
  • Focus Jewel: Increases the fill rate for weapons with gauges.
  • Quickswitch: Increases switch speed and power for Switch Axes.

A Blast Switch Axe build is what got me through my entire Monster Hunter Wilds playthrough.

For those who love elements, don’t hesitate to replace ‘Blast’ with ‘Dragon’, as it’s the element that many monsters are vulnerable to.

Use Sword Mode to Destroy Tails

What makes the Switch Axe stand out is its razor-sharp blade, ideal for severing monsters’ tails. Given that tails contain some of the most valuable materials in the game, this feature proves particularly advantageous.

To handle this effectively, aim for the tail using Axe Mode, obliterate either regular or toughened injuries to debilitate the monster, followed by switching to Sword mode and making an attempt to sever the tail once the monster is nearly defeated.

Even though the monster appears feeble, it may require some time before its tail detaches, but rest assured, it will eventually separate, enabling you to dissect it.
