Imagine me, a die-hard fan, musing over the captivating prospect of an Elden Ring movie. If the masterful storyteller George R.R. Martin penned the script, the cinematic experience would be nothing short of breathtaking. Alas, we can only dream about unraveling such a tale on the big screen.
During an interview with IGN, George R.R. Martin hinted at potential plans for turning the game “Elden Ring” into a movie. Being instrumental in shaping its universe, Martin collaborated extensively with FromSoftware throughout the development process.
He concedes that composing a movie script might be something that occurs after he finishes The Winds of Winter – the sixth installment in A Song of Ice and Fire, a series which spawned Game of Thrones. This book is 13 years late, and while he’s acknowledged it might remain unfinished, he continues to regard completing it as his primary goal. This means it’s unlikely he will write a script for the rumored Elden Ring movie anytime soon.
FromSoftware’s past comments also hint about an Elden Ring movie
George R.R. Martin has been hesitant when it comes to discussing a potential Elden Ring adaptation, but FromSoftware has suggested the idea on two separate occasions.
In June 2024, the director of Elden Ring, Hidetaka Miyazaki, mentioned to The Guardian that he doesn’t foresee any objection to creating a different interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, such as a film.
Instead, he pointed out that FromSoftware might lack the necessary skills for filmmaking and would need a highly competent partner to bring it to fruition. While George R.R. Martin could potentially be a valuable collaborator, Miyazaki was probably implying the involvement of a full-fledged movie production studio as well.
In a December 2024 interview with Game Watch, Miyazaki was somewhat cryptic about the future of Elden Ring without explicitly confirming or denying anything: “At the moment,” he explained, “we’re not thinking about an Elden Ring 2. However, this doesn’t mean we’ve completely closed the door on additional developments for the Elden Ring franchise. As for what lies ahead, FromSoftware continues to have numerous projects in development.”
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve been buzzing with excitement over the latest whispers about Elden Ring, but truth be told, no official word has come from FromSoftware about an Elden Ring film just yet. It’s all speculation for now.
