Monster Hunter Wilds’ Story Will Focus on the Relationship Between Hunters and Nature
Preparing for the February 28 launch of Monster Hunter Wilds, director Yuya Tokuda has shared that a significant theme running through the game will be the bond between hunters and their environment. In an exclusive conversation with PCGamer, Tokuda explained that Wilds was conceptualized around the dynamic interplay among people, wildlife, and monsters, and the question of what it truly means to be a hunter in such a world.
He went on to explain, “We aimed to demonstrate not only via the gameplay, but through a rich narrative as well…,” he said. “There are numerous elements in our future plans that align with the essence of Monster Hunter Wilds. We’re quite certain this game successfully conveyed the message we intended to share about it.
It’s important to mention that the Monster Hunter series hasn’t historically placed a lot of weight on its narrative. Instead, until the debut of World and spin-off games like the Stories series, Monster Hunter primarily provided storyline through quest descriptions and was mainly renowned for its engaging gameplay. However, with the launch of World, the franchise started to emphasize storytelling more, and Wilds is set to delve deeper into this aspect by enhancing dialogue.
As a gamer, I appreciate the flexibility of games like this one. Even though Tokuda highlights the importance of the story, I can still opt to focus solely on hunting my beloved monsters if I wish.
As a gamer myself, I get it if some folks want to dive straight into slaying the next beast without delving deep into the lore. That’s cool too! The amount of text within the game doesn’t determine the number of monsters you’ll encounter, so we’ve got options for everyone.
Performing this action might cause players to overlook the intricate characters and narratives that Monster Hunter Wilds aims to create, such as the fresh character, Nata, and her impact on the game’s overarching storyline.
In Tokuda’s words, “We have diverse individuals inhabiting this world, such as Nata, who experienced his hometown being ravaged by a monster, and Olivia, who strives to rectify that situation. Our world is populated by people with a variety of viewpoints. We also aimed to depict the emotions and thoughts of the hunter in such a world. How would they react? What would they ponder? Since everyone is unique, we incorporated elements reflecting these differences into Monster Hunter Wilds.
Additionally, Tokuda mentioned that the studio has numerous other projects in the pipeline, which will delve into similar subjects and expand upon the elements showcased in Wilds.
Although some might perceive the Monster Hunter series as somewhat harsh at times, it consistently incorporates themes of ecological conservation and coexisting with nature subtly. Earlier games in the franchise often centered around preserving the world’s balance by protecting areas from invasive species. Even series like Monster Hunter Stories and its sequel present characters who form friendships with monsters instead of just hunting them.
The action-adventure game titled “Monster Hunter Wilds” is making its way onto PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S platforms. For those who have recently played “Monster Hunter Rise”, here are some changes you’ll notice. And if you’re a PC gamer, you might find the PC Benchmark Tool useful.
