Nvidia didn’t send the Monster Hunter Wilds devs any RTX 5000 cards before their CES reveal, so official DLSS 4 support is still in progress
Given the high anticipation for Monster Hunter Wilds as one of the top games expected in 2025, it’s plausible that Capcom and Nvidia would join forces to make the PC version of Wilds a true standout. Historically, Nvidia and AMD often partner with developers to optimize games before their release, ensuring that drivers are ready for the launch day. It’s also common knowledge that they sometimes supply new hardware to major developers ahead of its official release, correct? During my conversation with Monster Hunter Wilds director Yuya Tokuda in January, shortly after the announcement of the RTX 5000 series, I inquired whether his team had already tested the new hardware and if we could anticipate DLSS 4 support in Wilds on its release day.
Somewhat surprisingly, no and no.
Tokuda informed me on January 15 that as of then, there hadn’t been any communication or indication from the Monster Hunter Wilds team regarding anything related. This was nine days after Nvidia unveiled the RTX 5000 series at CES, but before the graphics cards were available for purchase (fingers crossed that no one on the Monster Hunter team had to wait in line for a 5090 outside an electronics store in Akihabara).
It seems that Capcom might have received some advanced GPUs from Nvidia after my interview with Tokuda in Los Angeles, and I assumed that any game developer would probably get early access to such hardware. However, it turns out that the studio responsible for what could be the most popular PC game of the year is particularly likely to receive such pre-release equipment! Little did I know!
When might we observe the recently unveiled and seemingly potent DLSS 4 in Monster Hunter Wilds? The beta version and its PC benchmark currently support DLSS, along with AI-enhanced upscaling from AMD and Intel, but they’re not yet utilizing the latest iteration of Nvidia’s technology: both versions of the game are running on DLSS 3.7.10, which was released in mid-2024. I inquired about this with Tokuda, but he didn’t provide a definitive answer—however, it appears that we can anticipate a delay before we see it.
In order to determine whether we can provide support for a given item, it is essential that we conduct tests first. At present, it is difficult to make a definitive decision, but rest assured, we strive to test with the latest graphics cards whenever possible.
For tinkerers, here’s some exciting news: You don’t need to wait for Capcom to add DLSS 4 support to Monster Hunter Wilds to use it! By running the game’s benchmark and utilizing the latest version of DLSS Swapper, you can upgrade the DLSS version. This isn’t limited to RTX 5000 series; my RTX 3070 runs it smoothly. If you have an older graphics card and struggle to maintain a smooth 60 fps in games like Monster Hunter Wilds, this could be helpful as it allows you to switch from “balanced” to “performance” mode.
