As a longtime fan of Andrew Tierney from Human Nature, I was really saddened to hear he’s still facing challenges with alcohol. It’s been almost ten years since he first tried to give it up, and it’s just a reminder that these things can be a lifelong battle. It takes a lot of courage to be open about it, and I’m sending him all my support.
On the latest episode of the Mental As Anyone podcast, the 51-year-old, who has one child, revealed he had a relapse while on tour in Australia five years ago.
Andrew snuck a bottle of vodka behind the scenes, and it caused an awkward argument with his brother and fellow band member, Mike Tierney.
Andrew remembered seeing Mike after the performance, and said Mike looked very pale. He also thought he’d successfully concealed the alcohol he wasn’t supposed to have, despite the group’s rules.
Honestly, it was a really awkward moment. Someone noticed a bottle in my bag and immediately questioned it. Looking back, I realize how silly it was to even have it hidden – it felt incredibly childish and immature. I just wasn’t thinking clearly, and it’s something I definitely regret now.
The Las Vegas-based entertainer revealed he stopped drinking eight years ago, but confessed it hasn’t always been easy maintaining his sobriety.
‘You know, I still struggle…[as] someone who likes to still get a buzz,’ he said.
You know, Jonathan Mohan asked me directly if I’d call myself an alcoholic, and honestly, I had to admit I do struggle with it. It’s something I’m facing, and I recognize it’s a problem for me.
He admitted that once he started drinking, he wouldn’t be able to limit himself. He jokingly confessed he’d probably want around seven drinks.
Andrew said that since his lapse backstage five years ago, he has drunk occasionally.
He admitted to having a drink, adding that he hadn’t been heavily affected by alcohol in the past, but hadn’t been drinking recently.
The performer made headlines in 2018 when he discussed his alcohol issues in detail.
Andrew told The Daily Telegraph that he originally used alcohol to calm his nerves before performing.
But it led to a full-blown drinking problem that spiralled out of control.
It happened gradually. It began with nerves before performances – one night I just couldn’t hit a certain note – and then my drinking spiraled out of control. I realized I wasn’t living the life I wanted.
I was really shocked to read that he’d admitted to drinking vodka straight and, even worse, to being dishonest with his wife, Heather, about how much he was struggling. It’s heartbreaking to think about, honestly.
‘I got to this low point where I had to stop,’ he added.
Human Nature began in 1989 with the Tierney brothers, along with musicians Toby Allen and Phil Burton. They quickly rose to become one of Australia’s most popular groups during the 1990s.
The group’s 1996 debut album Telling Everybody was a huge hit, earning them triple platinum status.
By the late 2000s, the band was a regular attraction in Las Vegas, performing extended engagements at hotels such as the Venetian and Imperial Palace.
They were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2019 and went on to release 12 albums together.
Andrew and Heather got married in 1999 and have a daughter named Violette, born in 2016.
