Ian Jones-Quartey, writer for Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars, recently shared good news about the upcoming spinoff. Announced by Steven Universe creator Rebecca Sugar in June 2025 (as reported by Deadline at the Annecy International Film Festival), the show will continue the franchise on Amazon Prime Video. Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars will delve into the universe’s past, present, and future, following Lars Barriga—an endlessly young space pirate—and his crew, the Off Colors, as they embark on adventurous crimes and uncover the dark secrets of a fallen empire.
Ever since it was first announced in June 2025, there haven’t been many public details about the new spinoff, which led some fans to wonder if the project had been delayed or put on hold. Fortunately, Ian Jones-Quartey, a writer for Lars of the Stars, recently shared an encouraging update on X, confirming that work on the Steven Universe spinoff is still ongoing, though he doesn’t have any specific news to announce just yet.
We’re still developing Lars of the Stars, but I don’t have any updates to share at this moment. Hopefully, we’ll have some news soon!
When asked about the timeline for the studio’s expansion, Jones-Quartey said they’ll keep working “until it’s finished or they’re told to halt the project.”

Ian Jones-Quartey has confirmed the team is still developing the Lars of the Stars spinoff, which is good news and suggests we might hear official announcements soon.
As a huge fan of Steven Universe, I was so excited to see where things went with Lars of the Stars. It picks up right after the end of the original series and Steven Universe Future. Remember when Lars and the Off Colors blasted off into space at the end of “Little Graduation”? Well, this series shows us what they get up to! It’s all about their crazy adventures as space pirates, and ultimately, their quest to uncover the mysteries of the universe. It really felt like a natural continuation of their story.
The new spinoff series will focus on Lars Barriga and the members of his pirate crew, the Off Colors – including the Rutile Twins, Rhodonite, Padparadscha, and Fluorite. While Steven and the Crystal Gems aren’t currently planned to make appearances, there’s a chance they could show up in future episodes.
Okay, so Steven Universe is this amazing show created by Rebecca Sugar. It centers around Steven, who’s half-human, half-Gem – basically, he’s got magical powers! He lives with the Crystal Gems, these incredible beings who are all about protecting Earth. The series is really about Steven figuring out who he is, what his powers mean, and uncovering the secrets of this huge, ancient Gem civilization. It’s a total journey of self-discovery wrapped up in awesome action and music!
No release date has been announced yet for Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars.
Why Lars’ Upcoming Spinoff Is a Must-See
Lars Barriga went through a significant transformation in Steven Universe. Initially portrayed as an insecure and often bullying teenager, he developed into a true hero in Season 5. This change came about through his connection with the Off Colors, and he ultimately gave his life to save Steven and his friends from the Robonoids.
Steven brought Lar back to life, but the resurrection came with a change: Lar’s skin and hair turned pink, and he now has powers similar to those of the Gems. He can store things and teleport using a pocket dimension hidden in his hair that’s connected to Lion’s mane, he’s much more durable, and he doesn’t need to eat or age like a normal person.
Fans can expect to see Lars take center stage and really demonstrate his skills, which is great considering the dangerous smuggling missions he and his crew will be involved in. It will also be interesting to watch Lars develop as a leader of the Off Colors, especially since he began as a somewhat reckless character in the original series.
Okay, so this new series is shaping up to be a really fun ride. Think swashbuckling space pirates – very much in the vein of the lovable rogues from Guardians of the Galaxy – but with a surprisingly emotional center. They’re clearly building everything around Lars, and if they can capture even a fraction of the heart that made Steven Universe so special, we’re in for something truly great. It’s a promising blend of action and feels, and I’m genuinely excited to see how it all plays out.
