Steven Soderbergh Says Ben Solo Movie Still Isn’t Happening After ‘Star Wars’ Shakeup

The Star Wars sequel trilogy isn’t without its detractors, and it was always going to be difficult to satisfy every fan. However, the acting was consistently strong, with Adam Driver receiving particular praise for his portrayal of both Kylo Ren and Ben Solo. It was disappointing for many when The Rise of Skywalker killed off Ben, preventing a continuation of his story alongside Daisy Ridley’s Rey. Despite this, Adam Driver recently revealed he attempted to create a spin-off series focused on Ben Solo, and he even approached director Steven Soderbergh to help develop it.

Like many Star Wars ideas, this one was eventually abandoned. But when Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy stepped down earlier this year, and Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan took over, people began to wonder if previously cancelled projects – like a film about Ben Solo – might be reconsidered. Director Steven Soderbergh was asked by The Playlist if he’d bring the project back, and he simply said, “No.”

Unlike Rian Johnson, the director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, who constantly faced questions about a planned trilogy he was supposed to develop, Steven Soderbergh offered a straightforward explanation: “If it was going to happen, it would have happened. It’s that simple.”

Rumors about a Star Wars spin-off aren’t surprising – almost any character could get their own expanded story in a new movie or TV series. What made the potential Ben Solo movie particularly interesting was the involvement of director Steven Soderbergh, and the fact that Adam Driver, who played Ben Solo, seemed hesitant to reprise his role in the Star Wars universe. Surprisingly, Driver was actually the one pushing to make this project happen.

The filmmaker explained that it was Adam who initially suggested revisiting the character. ‘He simply said he felt there was more story to tell,’ the director confessed. ‘Without that, I wouldn’t have considered returning to that world.’

Beyond knowing the story would follow The Rise of Skywalker, very little has been revealed about the project since Adam Driver mentioned trying to get it made. Steven Soderbergh, a very productive director who released Presence and Black Bag close together in 2025, and premiered The Christophers later that year (which opens this month), said he was glad to have been considered, but moved on quickly when the project was cancelled.

Once it became clear that something wasn’t going to work out, I immediately started working on a different project. It was a matter of accepting the change and getting started on a new plan. Eventually, dwelling on the problem becomes pointless – you just have to keep going.

He said he wouldn’t change a thing about the time they spent on the project, believing the work itself was valuable. He compared the experience to a tough workout like CrossFit, explaining that even though it’s challenging, it has lasting benefits you might not anticipate.
