‘Michael’ Original Ending Reshot After Jackson Estate Error Surfaced

The making of the Michael Jackson biopic has been challenging. The film faced multiple script revisions, additional filming, and a setback when screenwriter John Logan’s home was damaged in the Palisades Fire. While currently slated for release on April 24th, insiders say the final movie differs greatly from the original script. A late discovery reportedly forced the filmmakers to discard a significant amount of already-shot footage and rewrite key parts of the story.

As a longtime follower of Michael Jackson, I remember when the first accusations of child sexual abuse surfaced in 1993. It involved a 13-year-old boy named Jordan Chandler and his family, who claimed Jackson had assaulted him – they’d met through his stepfather’s business. Though no criminal charges were filed, a civil lawsuit was eventually settled for a reported $25 million in 1994. I was really excited about a planned movie, Michael, which was meant to start in 1993 with a dramatic scene of him looking in a mirror as police lights flashed at Neverland Ranch. Apparently, the filmmakers had envisioned a powerful opening showing investigators searching his home for evidence. But according to Variety, that whole scene had to be cut because of a clause in the settlement with Jordan Chandler, which legally prevented any mention of him in a film. It’s frustrating to learn about how that impacted the project.

The upcoming Michael Jackson biopic will avoid addressing the accusations that followed him in his later years. Instead, it will center on his complex relationship with his father, Joe Jackson, and Joe’s reluctance to let Michael pursue a solo career while still with the Jackson 5. The film will also depict Jackson’s severe burns from a 1984 Pepsi commercial accident and the resulting painkiller addiction. Those who’ve previewed the movie say it ends just before the start of Jackson’s Bad tour, meaning it concludes four to six years before the first allegations surfaced.

Originally planned for release on April 18, 2025, the film Michael faced several delays, ultimately landing a release this spring. After realizing they couldn’t address certain allegations made by Chandler, the filmmakers spent 22 days reshooting scenes last June. These reshoots added around $25 million to the film’s budget, which the Jackson estate – a producer on the film – covered due to their responsibility for the issue.

The new film about Michael Jackson, costing $155 million to make, stars his nephew, Jafaar Jackson, who is 29 years old. Colman Domingo, an Oscar nominee and known for his role in Euphoria, plays Michael’s father, Joe. Fans hoping to see Janet Jackson in the movie will be disappointed, as she won’t be appearing. Despite some difficulties during production, the film is predicted to earn around $700 million globally for Lionsgate, with an estimated $55 million opening weekend in the US.
