Dax Shepard breaks silence on Kristen Bell’s disturbing anniversary post that sparked outrage from domestic violence groups

Dax Shepard recently shared that he had no idea Kristen Bell’s Instagram post about their relationship caused such a big reaction.

The actress caused a lot of controversy last October when she posted a message marking twelve years together.

Bell received backlash after sharing a joke about a past promise from her husband – ‘I would never kill you.’ Many fans felt the comment was insensitive and downplayed the seriousness of domestic violence.

As criticism mounted, Bell had no choice but to restrict comments on the post.

Six months on, Shepard is finally breaking his silence on what went on behind the scenes. 

He revealed on Monday’s episode of his podcast, Armchair Expert, with guest Nikki Glaser, that someone had informed him about what was going on.

I found out about it a week and a half later, after my publicist told me Kristen already knew – she hadn’t mentioned it to me directly. I was completely unaware until then.

Shepard told Glaser that someone had expressed concern for them, which prompted them to ask Kristen what was happening. Apparently, Kristen had made a post that sparked the conversation.

The post featured a photo of Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell hugging, celebrating their 12th wedding anniversary. The caption included a quote from Shepard: “I would never kill you. A lot of men have killed their wives, and even though I have reasons to, I never would.”

The caption sparked a mixed bag of reactions.

Comedian Howie Mandel joked, ‘He should write for Hallmark.’ 

However, not everyone found it funny. One person who saw the joke commented, ‘It’s really not okay to joke about something like that, especially considering I’m a survivor.’

Another added, ‘What a wild thing to post during Domestic Violence Awareness month.’

Glaser mentioned a post that caused controversy on its anniversary, telling Shepard she’d even thought about making a joke about it during her speech at the 2026 Golden Globes back in January.

She confessed that she hadn’t acted because of their friendship, explaining, “I didn’t want to make things even more difficult for him.”

‘I definitely want to hear it,’ Shepard encouraged.

Okay, so Kristen Glaser just showed us this amazing joke on her phone – it said, ‘Die, My Love. If I Had Legs, I’d Kick You. Sorry, Baby.’ And then she dropped the biggest bomb! She was like, ‘Guys, this isn’t just something Dax Shepard wrote for his anniversary post… these are the titles of movies that are nominated tonight!’ I seriously almost lost it. It’s brilliant, right? Absolutely brilliant!

Shepard chuckled, but Glaser explained she eventually cut the joke because it was no longer relevant. ‘It felt stale by the time we got to it,’ she said.

Even though I was thrilled when Shepard took out that one joke, I have to admit, everyone at the Golden Globes was still talking about the couple and how much they share! It was the buzz of the night, honestly.

By that point, the news cycle had shifted to an interview the couple gave alongside Cher, who had acted with Bell in the movie Burlesque (2010). Cher didn’t hesitate to share her honest opinion of Shepard during the conversation.

“You’re a lucky one,” Cher said with a playful tone. “She’s clearly the stronger person in the relationship… you must have qualities I’m not aware of.”

In the days following the interview, the couple found themselves constantly asked about it, even while walking the Golden Globes red carpet. As Dax Shepard explained to Howard Stern, ‘Every single interview came back to Cher.’

What really bothers me is that we went ahead and released it. I actually think it’s funny, and that’s why I shared it.
