The X-Men are poised to make a significant impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios previously selected Jake Schreier, the director of Thunderbolts, to lead the first X-Men movie within the MCU, and it’s now being reported that writers have also joined the project.
But that’s only the start of Marvel’s plans for mutants. According to a recent interview, Marvel is already thinking about even more mutant-focused movies within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
According to Shreier, the primary goal is to create an excellent film. However, during development, they’re always considering potential future directions for the story, drawing inspiration from the comics and exploring less-used ideas. They actively brainstorm different possibilities and paths the story could take, aiming for originality and fresh perspectives, and these ideas are constantly part of the conversation.
Marvel Studios’ X-Men Reboot Finds Its Writers
Marvel Studios hasn’t shared much about the upcoming X-Men movie since appointing a director. However, director Shreier recently revealed that the writers of the Netflix hit Beef are now working on the script for the X-Men reboot.
We’re still in the early stages of development,” Shreier explained. “Something really great is that the creators of Beef, Sonny Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo, are both involved. Beef was primarily Sonny’s project, and Joanna also contributed to that season. We all previously collaborated on Season 1 of Beef and Thunderbolts, so it’s fantastic to have that same team working on a new draft now.”
The X-Men Are Appearing Around the MCU Before Their Own Movie
Although Marvel Studios hasn’t released a dedicated X-Men movie yet, characters connected to the X-Men have already begun appearing in the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In Deadpool & Wolverine, mutants took center stage as Marvel Studios reunited Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool. The film served as a celebratory farewell to the Marvel movies originally produced by 20th Century Fox. While the events of the movie didn’t happen within the main Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline, they were loosely connected to the larger story Marvel Studios is building.
Plus, there’s X-Men ’97, the popular return of the 1990s X-Men cartoon, which is set in yet another universe within Marvel’s multiverse.
I’m really excited for Spider-Man: Brand New Day! While Marvel hasn’t officially said anything about mutants appearing in the new movie (though we are getting the Hulk and Punisher!), some of the trailers and promotional materials have definitely made me wonder if they’re hinting at mutant characters. I guess we’ll all find out for sure when the movie hits theaters on July 31st – I can’t wait!
