While many artists have recorded albums of Tom Waits’ songs, an upcoming release is unique because it celebrates both Tom Waits and his wife, Kathleen Brennan. Brennan is a hugely important, though often uncredited, creative force behind Waits’ work, having co-written many of his most famous songs.
Fans can look forward to hearing an album called Where the Willow and the Dogwood Grow, which includes 19 songs by well-known artists. The lineup features a live recording of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band performing their hit, “Jersey Girl.”
The Blind Boys of Alabama recorded their own rendition of “Way Down in the Hole,” a song you might recognize as the theme song from a season of the acclaimed TV show, The Wire. If you’re familiar with that version, you’ll notice it’s heavily influenced by the styles of Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan.
Cover compilation of Tom Wats and Kathleen Brennan songs promises to be epic
The album also features contributions from music legends like Willie Nelson, Norah Jones, Alison Krauss, Robert Plant, and the late Johnny Cash. Cash’s participation is a big reason why this album is expected to be fantastic. While not every song is a brand new cover, each one is a truly exceptional rendition.
The album comes out on May 29th, but you can listen to some of the tracks on your preferred streaming service right now.
