The UK will now be able to stream Steve Coogan’s film Saipan, which dramatizes the famous dispute between Irish footballer Roy Keane and his manager, Mick McCarthy.
The film, directed by Glenn Leyburn and Lisa Barros D’Sa and written by Paul Fraser, tells the story of the Irish national football team’s journey leading up to the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Actor Steve Coogan plays the role of Ireland’s manager, Mick McCarthy, and Éanna Hardwicke, known for his work in Normal People, portrays Roy Keane.
The critically acclaimed film Saipan, which first came out in 2025, is now streaming on Prime Video after being added to their selection over the weekend.
The movie’s title comes from Saipan, the capital of the Northern Mariana Islands, where the Irish team practiced before their games in Japan during April 2002.
Keane and McCarthy had a falling out because Keane was unhappy with several things: the poor conditions at their training camp, the travel plans, and a surprising lack of footballs for practice. He also didn’t have confidence in McCarthy’s ability to manage the team.

The film Saipan has received overwhelmingly positive reviews, earning a 93% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 45 reviews. Praised for its strong acting and clever writing (according to Radio Times), critics have described it as a compelling look at Irish identity (The Daily Telegraph) and a fascinating reflection of recent Irish history (Collider).
While Rolling Stone praised the movie as outstanding, other reviewers weren’t as impressed with this version of the Saipan incident.
According to The Playlist, the film feels like a project simply meant to record a historical moment that’s becoming less important. The Sun criticized it, saying it lacked enough substance to fill a full-length 90-minute movie.
The film features Harriet Cains from Bridgerton as Theresa Keane, alongside Alice Lowe as Fiona McCarthy, Alex Murphy as Eddy Power, and Jack Hickey as Niall Quinn, in addition to stars Coogan and Hardwicke.
Saipan is streaming on Prime Video.
