Anne-Marie Duff Opens Up About Brother’s Shock Dementia Diagnosis at 40

Anne-Marie Duff has opened up about her brother Eddie’s shock diagnosis of young-onset dementia. 

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but feel deeply saddened when reflecting on the journey of the Shameless star’s sibling. Nine long years ago, during his 40s, he was given the devastating news that he had an incurable condition. However, looking back, she confides that symptoms may have started as early as fourteen years prior to this diagnosis.

In an interview with The Sunday Times, Anne-Marie shared her observation that Eddie was finding it tough to manage – often arriving late at work or taking the incorrect bus, which ultimately led to him losing his position as a researcher.

She struggled to understand why he seemed disorganized, wondering if it was due to substance abuse, mental health issues, or a combination of both.

However, she hadn’t expected him to have early-stage dementia, a heartbreaking disease that affects individuals before they reach 65 years old.

Anne-Marie expressed her sorrow, reflecting on how Eddie found it hard to grasp or understand his irreversible diagnosis initially, speaking with hope that he’d one day get better.

Anne-Marie expressed that it was disheartening as he found it difficult to accept and understand it, adding that it can be quite forceful or harsh when something like this happens so unexpectedly at an early stage.

Nine years back, Eddie didn’t have a job, a partner or any children to look after him. When he got the tragic diagnosis, he was placed in government-subsidized assisted living accommodations instead.

Anne-Marie mentioned that Eddie’s health situation has advanced significantly. Now being 56 years old, Eddie requires specialized housing that is not readily available, along with constant care.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d express it this way: “I, being a caretaker for my brother, find it essential that he resides in a safe and secure living environment due to his tendency to wander unsupervised. Given the responsibilities entrusted to me through power of attorney, I am committed to ensuring his well-being.

Despite the deterioration of their situation, Anne-Marie and her kinstill discover instances of happiness and share laughter among themselves.

‘You will get precious memories, even though the memories are cobwebs,’ she said. 

She additionally mentioned that it’s heartwarming to observe her parents resuming their nurturing care for him, much as they did when he was a kid. She went on to say, “Simply witnessing them continue to parent and helping him shave, things like that are incredibly beautiful.

Anne-Marie opened up about Eddie’s condition on BBC Woman’s Hour back in December.

I shared with BBC’s Nuala McGovern that we’ve reached a stage where he requires extensive care, hence we are in the process of applying for it. Needless to say, this is a challenging period, and my sympathies extend to anyone grappling with the administrative hurdles and logistical complexities that come with such a situation.

Approximately 14 years ago, he started living with this condition, and given that he’s just a few years my senior, it means he was quite young when diagnosed, around eight to nine years back.

Indeed, it’s quite challenging because it seems like the person is gradually fading away right before us.

She went on to explain: “Yet, the love lingers and I believe that’s one of the blessings from everything, as the love is palpable within the space. There’s a silent version of your bond that resonates beyond what can be spoken… it feels like another dimension altogether. It’s truly captivating.

Although he doesn’t recognize me, he understands my affection for him, which intrigues me. However, I am aware of the impact this situation can have on his family.”
