The final episode of Secret Service aired this Tuesday, May 5th, with incredibly high stakes. Kate Henderson finally revealed the Russian spy working inside the British government. Still grieving after Rav’s death in the previous episode, Kate (played by Gemma Arterton) was more determined than ever to find out the truth.
As the mystery started to unravel, I was shocked to realize how close the danger actually was – it was way closer to home than Kate ever imagined! The biggest twist? Kate found out her husband, Stuart (played by Rafe Spall), was much more involved in everything than she could have possibly believed. It was a total bombshell!
Stuart was identified as the man in the Montenegro video with Imogen Conrad, before it was edited. Igor recruited him after Russian intelligence obtained the footage. Desperate to keep the brief encounter secret, Stuart agreed to share confidential information about the British government, and later, about Kate’s work.

The betrayal was a breaking point for Kate. Instead of reporting Stuart, she advised him to escape to Russia. This decision meant the end of their marriage, but she hoped it would shield their children, Gus and Fiona, from the shame of a public trial.
The situation continued to worsen as Imogen’s scandal allowed Ryan Walker (Mark Stanley) to firmly establish himself in power at 10 Downing Street. This added to the existing instability, and people quickly began to question where his true allegiances lay.
What to Read Next
The episode ended with a lot of uncertainty. Kate seemed prepared to leave MI6 while at Rav’s funeral, but her boss quickly changed her mind. She was assigned to monitor the new Prime Minister, as there were concerns he might be connected to Russian intelligence.
Kate’s character finished the series Secret Service by meeting Ryan in the Prime Minister’s office, shortly after his appointment. The finale left things open-ended, leading viewers to wonder if the five-part thriller will be renewed. While ITV hasn’t confirmed a second season, the story definitely has potential to continue.

The show is adapted from the first book in Tom Bradby’s trilogy, and the remaining two books, Double Agent and Triple Cross, already provide a clear plan for future seasons. This pre-existing story material makes it easy to continue the show’s plot and keep a consistent storyline.
Several important questions still need answers. We don’t yet know where Ryan Walker’s loyalties truly lie, and it would be unsatisfying to leave that mystery unresolved. Now that Kate is working in the Cabinet Office, she’s in a perfect position to investigate him, which could lead to a second part of the story focused more on political intrigue.
The show’s ending leaves room to consider how the characters will deal with the aftermath personally. Kate’s choice about Stuart will likely cause problems, especially as she tries to be a good mother to Fiona and Gus. The idea of Stuart visiting the children in another country suggests this story isn’t over and could continue in future seasons.

Tom Bradby has indicated that the story was created with the potential for future installments. He explained that it was intended to be broadly appealing entertainment, not something for a small, specialized audience. Bradby also suggested the creators aimed to make the series so captivating that viewers would binge-watch it and immediately want more episodes. He stated their goal was to create a highly entertaining story that would leave audiences eager for a second series.
The story’s origins in current events suggest it could easily continue. Tom, the creator, explained in an interview with Radio Times that he was inspired by what felt like a new Cold War, the weakening of democracies, and concerns about corruption among Western leaders. He believes these themes are still important and provide plenty of material for future seasons.
Secret Service airs on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
