Kat Dennings Reveals Shocking Childhood Audition Rejections: ‘They Called Me Fat and Not Pretty Enough!’

Back in my younger days, when I was just a preteen with stars in my eyes, I faced some harsh words from casting directors who labeled me “too fat” and questioned if I was pretty enough.

At just nine years old, “The Shifting Gears” actress made her entrance into the entertainment world through advertisements. Later, at the age of 14, she secured her first television series role in an episode of “Sex and the City.

She achieved her most notable success as an established actress, playing a leading role in the sitcom “2 Broke Girls” and portraying a character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Currently, as she reflects upon the beginnings of her professional journey, the 38-year-old woman recounts certain instances of particularly harsh criticism that she encountered during auditions.

Observing that the entertainment industry back then was ‘extremely tough,’ she remarked that casting directors could exhibit ‘uncompromisingly unkind behavior’ towards children as well.

She recalled saying, “It was quite astonishing to consider. It seemed unbelievable to me: ‘How could someone speak about a young child in such a manner? This is utterly absurd,'” to People.

In a similar vein, when I was 12 years old, I’d attend auditions and perform, only to receive a call from my manager afterward, with me asking, “How did it go?” To which they would reply something like, “They felt you weren’t considered attractive enough and you were too heavy.” This is how Kat put it.

During my initial acting years, the atmosphere was significantly distinct compared to today. Back then, inclusivity was scarcely present; it was an unforgiving environment. The criticism was often intense, and people were not hesitant to express their negative opinions openly.

Despite facing venomous criticism early in her profession, she maintained a robust mental attitude and dismissed the criticisms as unjustified.

Or:

Though she encountered harsh criticism at the start of her career, she held on to a resilient mindset and considered the criticisms as misguided.

In my personal experience, despite the challenges I faced, I managed to maintain a resilient spirit. It was as if I whispered to myself, “I’ll prove them wrong.” Funny enough, I can attribute this mindset to my parents who, in similar situations, would say, “They’re foolish. Don’t pay heed to their words.” And I, in turn, would echo the same sentiment, “They’re foolish, I’m not.” This self-assuredness was instilled in me by my upbringing.

Kat believes that the world of show business nowadays is more “gentle” and “compassionate” compared to the “extremely chaotic” atmosphere where she initially established herself.

She mentioned, “Before, we didn’t have body positivity, inclusivity, or representation. It felt extremely uncomfortable.

In 2000, her confidence proved to be justified as she seized a standout role at 14 years old in an episode of Sex and the City.

Titled “Hot Child, Urban Jungle,” this episode features Kat, a pampered preteen, enlisting Samantha Jones, a formidable PR powerhouse played by Kim Cattrall, for the planning of her bat mitzvah.

Katie gained fame as a leading actress for portraying one of the main roles in the successful TV series “2 Broke Girls,” which aired on CBS from 2011 to 2017.

Developed by comedian Whitney Cummings and Sex and the City’s Michael Patrick King, the series features Kat and Beth Behrs portraying characters from different social strata who find themselves in similar financial circumstances, working together at a diner.

In addition, Kat was part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, taking on the humorous role of Darcy, who served as the close companion to the character portrayed by Natalie Portman in the Thor series of movies.

Currently, she stars as the estranged daughter in Tim Allen’s latest sitcom, Shifting Gears, making a comeback in his character’s life.
