Amazon’s Prime Video is still planning a TV series based on the popular video game Mass Effect, but fans might have to be patient. The Mass Effect games are known for their incredibly detailed stories, taking around 150 hours to finish all three games. While a TV series could allow for a more faithful adaptation, development has been slowed down. According to The Ankler, Peter Friedlander, head of global TV at Amazon MGM, is personally reviewing every script before giving the project the go-ahead.
David Friedlander, who used to work at Netflix, became the head of the TV division in October and immediately began making changes. He shifted the studio’s organization from being based on whether a show was fully owned or a co-production to teams focused on specific genres like drama, comedy, fantasy/sci-fi, animation, and reality TV. This change began in January. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Friedlander has asked the writers of the Mass Effect show to rework their scripts to appeal to a broader audience beyond video game fans.
According to The Ankler, a new TV series described as an expensive dramatic story is close to getting the go-ahead. While production hasn’t begun yet, it depends on the creators developing a script that will attract a wide audience. This shouldn’t be a problem, as the team adapting Mass Effect has a strong track record. The series is being written by Daniel Casey, known for his work on the 2021 film F9. Doug Jung, who wrote Star Trek Beyond and created the Apple TV show Chief of War, is leading the project as showrunner. Ari Arad and Karim Zreik, who previously worked on Jessica Jones, are executive producers.

The original Mass Effect trilogy, released between 2007 and 2012, was a huge hit with both players and critics. Fans have been hoping for an adaptation that looks great and stays true to the beloved story that’s captivated them for nearly twenty years. The game is set in a future where humans and aliens coexist, until Commander Shepard must save the galaxy from a dangerous race of intelligent machines. Mass Effect was celebrated for its gripping story, its portrayal of same-sex relationships, and its innovative ‘dialogue wheel’ – a feature that allowed players to shape the narrative and has since become common in other games.
Not much is known yet about the story of the upcoming TV series. However, Mike Gamble, a producer at BioWare, recently shared that the show will have a completely original storyline and praised the work being done by the team at Prime Video.
I’m so excited to share that the writers’ room is really making progress! We’re carefully figuring out how our story fits into the established Mass Effect universe and how it connects to the new game. We’re creating a completely new story that takes place after the events of the original trilogy. Don’t worry, it won’t be a rehash of Commander Shepard’s adventure – that’s your story to experience, and we want to tell something fresh!
In 2012, an animated film called Mass Effect: Paragon Lost was released, featuring Freddie Prinze Jr. as the voice of Lieutenant James Vega. While it didn’t receive many reviews from professional critics, viewers on platforms like Reddit and Rotten Tomatoes generally thought it was just okay. This suggests there’s a good opportunity for Friedlander and his team to create something even better.
