Steven Spielberg’s Jaws is a truly iconic film that continues to influence filmmakers. Despite numerous problems during production that nearly derailed it, the movie became a huge success. Like many of Spielberg’s films, Jaws isn’t just about a terrifying shark; it also offers compelling characters, humor, and excitement. Interestingly, Spielberg recently revealed there’s one genre he doesn’t consider the film to be.
The movie Jaws famously scared many people into fearing the ocean, playing on our natural anxieties about what might be hidden beneath the waves. While often considered the greatest horror film ever made, director Steven Spielberg recently stated he doesn’t believe he’s ever actually made a horror movie. This comment suggests he doesn’t see Jaws as belonging to that genre. He shared his thoughts in an interview with Empire Magazine.
“I haven’t directed a horror film yet, and I’ve always wanted to, and someday I may. “
This quote is a bit puzzling at first, considering how many exciting Spielberg films don’t fit neatly into the “horror” genre. Surprisingly, even his classic thriller Duel, about a man terrorized by a truck driver, doesn’t qualify as horror in Spielberg’s view. However, with Disclosure Day coming out this summer, he’s hinted at potentially making a true horror film “someday,” which has fans eagerly anticipating what a Spielberg horror movie would be like.
It’s interesting to note that even though some directors shy away from labeling their films as “horror” – fearing it might diminish their artistic value – Spielberg actually loves the genre. He explained this further:
Some recent horror movies have been really satisfying. When I watch a truly great one, like ‘Weapons,’ it doesn’t inspire me to try and top it with an even scarier film. It’s so good, it actually removes my desire to make a super scary movie myself.
It’s puzzling to hear Steven Spielberg claim he’s never directed a horror film. Movies like Jaws, Duel, War of the Worlds, and his segment of Twilight Zone: The Movie definitely feel like horror. He also produced several well-known horror films, including Poltergeist, Arachnophobia, Monster House, The Lovely Bones, and Super 8. Considering his skillful homage to The Shining in Ready Player One, it seems likely he’ll direct a true horror movie eventually.
