10 Near-Perfect Forgotten Horror TV Shows That Deserve A Second Chance

Horror has given us some truly exceptional TV shows, though many other good ones have faded from memory for various reasons. Despite being incredibly popular, horror on television often doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. What’s great about the genre is its ability to mix well with others, especially science fiction and comedy, creating a diverse range of viewing options.

Shows like The Twilight Zone and Buffy the Vampire Slayer really shaped the horror genre on television, and more recently, The Haunting of Hill House took it to another level. However, many other excellent horror shows haven’t gotten the recognition they deserve, often because they were lost in the shadow of bigger hits, suffered from poor marketing, or were simply scheduled at the wrong time. These overlooked gems deserve a second look.

Slasher (2016-2025)

Six Seasons

Slasher is a horror series created by Aaron Martin, where a different masked killer targets victims each season. It originally aired on Chiller in 2016, then moved to Netflix for seasons two and three. Subsequent seasons have premiered on Shudder, with the sixth season being presented as a standalone miniseries called Hell Motel.

Critics loved Slasher, highlighting its unique premise, compelling characters, engaging stories, and distinctive violence. While each season follows a similar format, it consistently delivers fresh and interesting content, making it a show worth watching. Despite this, Slasher didn’t receive much promotion and, combined with some inconsistencies in quality, it never gained a large audience.

Channel Zero (2016-2018)

Four Seasons

Channel Zero is a horror anthology series created by Nick Antosca. Similar to shows like Slasher, each season features a completely new story. However, Channel Zero draws its inspiration from popular online horror stories known as creepypastas. The first season, “Candle Cove,” follows a man investigating a strange TV show to see if it’s connected to his brother’s vanishing. The second season, “No-End House,” takes place in a terrifying haunted house.

Season 3, titled “Butcher’s Block,” follows a haunting mystery in a city plagued by disappearances. Season 4, “The Dream Door,” centers around a peculiar door discovered in a basement. While Channel Zero received praise from critics for its unique and well-made stories, it didn’t gain as much attention as more popular horror shows.

30 Coins (2020-2023)

Two Seasons

30 Coins is a Spanish TV series blending mystery and horror, created by Álex de la Iglesia. The show centers around Father Vergara (played by Eduard Fernández), a priest with a troubled past who’s trying to start over in the small town of Pedraza. When strange and unexplainable events begin happening, Vergara joins forces with the town’s mayor, Paco (Miguel Ángel Silvestre), and a local veterinarian, Elena (Megan Montaner), to uncover the truth.

The central mystery revolves around a coin belonging to Vergara, rumored to be one of the thirty pieces of silver paid to Judas for betraying Jesus. While this has religious roots, the show 30 Coins isn’t actually about religion. It’s a fast-paced mix of Lovecraftian horror, thriller elements, adventure, and drama. Despite its intriguing combination of genres, compelling characters, and quick pace, 30 Coins hasn’t gained widespread popularity, likely because it hasn’t been well-promoted.

Are You Afraid of the Dark? (1992-1996, 1999-2000, 2019-2022)

10 Seasons In Total

Are You Afraid of the Dark? is a spooky TV show made for kids and teens, created by D.J. MacHale and Ned Kandel. The show centers around a group of friends called “The Midnight Society” who meet in a hidden location in the woods at night to tell each other scary stories.

Each episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark? features a new story told from the perspective of a different member of the Midnight Society. While intended for younger viewers, many episodes are genuinely frightening. The show was rebooted in both 1999 and 2019, though the 2019 version significantly altered the original format. Are You Afraid of the Dark? faced competition from Goosebumps, and Goosebumps‘ greater success with adaptations and revivals has led to Are You Afraid of the Dark? being less well-known over time.

Santa Clarita Diet (2017-2019)

Three Seasons

Santa Clarita Diet is a funny and scary TV show created by Victor Fresco, featuring Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant. The show follows Sheila (Barrymore) and Joel Hammond (Olyphant), a married couple who work as real estate agents in Santa Clarita, California. Their lives are turned upside down when Sheila unexpectedly becomes undead and starts craving human meat.

Many viewers and critics loved Santa Clarita Diet for its unique combination of humor and horror, its heartwarming family story alongside a zombie plot, and the strong performances by Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant. Unfortunately, like several other well-received Netflix shows, it lacked sufficient promotion and was canceled prematurely, leaving fans with an unresolved ending.

Masters of Horror (2005-2007)

Two Seasons

Masters of Horror is a television show created by Mick Garris that showcases the work of renowned horror directors. Each episode is a standalone story, directed by a different master of the genre, resulting in a wide variety of tales, styles, and casts. Directors like Tobe Hooper, Dario Argento, and John Carpenter contributed to the series.

One of the best things about Masters of Horror was its variety of styles, but this also led to it being overlooked and often labeled as uneven. Despite a short run and a lack of promotion, it remains a compelling and worthwhile series.

Castle Rock

Two Seasons

Castle Rock is a scary, supernatural TV show created by Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason. It’s not based on one particular Stephen King book, but takes inspiration from the overall world he’s created in his stories. The show tells a different story each season, and the first season centers around a lawyer named Henry Deaver, played by André Holland.

Okay, so the new season kicks off with Henry back in Castle Rock after they find this incredibly strange prisoner at Shawshank – they just call him ‘The Kid,’ and Bill Skarsgård plays him. Turns out he’s been locked away in some secret underground cell for almost thirty years! But that’s not all – we also get a look back in time, a prequel of sorts, to the story of Annie Wilkes from Misery. Lizzy Caplan is fantastic as a young Annie, and we see her with her daughter, Joy, played by Elsie Fisher. It really sets the stage for the terrifying character we know from the original story.

Although the idea of a show existing within the world of Stephen King, without directly adapting one of his books, was a strong point, it also contributed to Castle Rock not gaining a larger following. Many found the show too specialized, and combined with ineffective promotion and its release on Hulu, it struggled to reach a broader audience.

Being Human (UK) (2008-2013)

Five Seasons

Being Human is a funny and dramatic TV show with a supernatural twist, created by Toby Whithouse. The show centers around three friends: John Mitchell, a vampire, and George Sands, a werewolf, who share a house with Annie Sawyer, a ghost. It follows their lives as they try to navigate being supernatural while living as normally as possible.

The show follows individuals striving to live fulfilling lives despite facing difficult personal circumstances. Originally broadcast on BBC Three, Being Human didn’t reach a large audience. The show also suffered from a complete cast change after its initial seasons, leading many viewers to stop watching, and was ultimately more popular in its American remake.

Ash vs Evil Dead (2015-2018)

Three Seasons

Developed by Sam Raimi, Ivan Raimi, and Tom Spezialy, Ash vs Evil Dead is a comedic horror TV series that continues the story of the original Evil Dead films. Bruce Campbell reprises his role as Ash Williams in the show, which picks up thirty years after the events of Army of Darkness.

Ash has settled into a normal life working as a stock boy, but his peace is shattered when the Evil Dead resurfaces with a new wave of terrifying creatures. He’s forced back into action and, with the help of some new friends, once again battles the forces of darkness. The show maintains the same wild, funny spirit as the original Ash movies.

Although the Evil Dead movies are well-known, the Ash vs Evil Dead TV show didn’t attract a very wide audience, likely because it was aimed at a specific group of viewers and shown on the Starz channel. However, it’s still highly recommended for anyone who enjoys the Evil Dead films or horror as a whole.

The Outer Limits (1963-1965)

Two Seasons

The Outer Limits is a science fiction and horror TV series created by Leslie Stevens. Each episode presents a standalone story, often featuring a monster or unusual threat, while also delving into thought-provoking ideas. Because of its format and atmosphere, it’s frequently compared to The Twilight Zone, though The Twilight Zone is generally more well-known.

As a huge fan of classic sci-fi and horror, I’ve always felt The Outer Limits never quite got the recognition it deserved. It struggled with bad TV scheduling back in the day, and while it had a decent revival in the ’90s lasting seven seasons, the original series remains surprisingly overlooked. I really think it’s time for a new generation to discover just how good it is – it truly deserves a wider audience.
