Okay, so Andrew Lloyd Webber – the guy who wrote Cats, obviously – has been talking about the movie version from 2019, and let me tell you, he hated it. He said it was appalling! He even joked that it was so bad, he went and got a dog just to have something nice to look at. Apparently, the movie – directed by Tom Hooper – is about a bunch of cats who have this competition to see who gets to be reborn, but it didn’t do so well at the box office, to say the least.
The movie is based on the popular 1981 stage musical, which itself came from T.S. Eliot’s 1939 book of poems, Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats. It features a cast full of famous actors.
The cast features a stellar lineup of stars, including James Corden, Judi Dench, Jason Derulo, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift, Rebel Wilson, and Francesca Hayward.

I was so surprised to hear Lloyd Webber talking about the Cats movie on CBS Sunday Morning! He actually said he got a dog to help him get over how tough making that film was. It’s just wild to think about, but I guess even brilliant composers need a little comfort after a project like that!
“After the appalling Cats movie, I went out and bought myself a little Havanese puppy,” he said.

He explained that he brings his therapy dog on planes by simply writing a note to the airline explaining the reason, and jokingly referencing the movie Cats. Surprisingly, the airline always responds saying a doctor’s note isn’t necessary.
Andrew Lloyd Webber has repeatedly criticized the movie adaptation of his musical. In a 2020 interview with The Times, he explained that the director, Tom Hooper, chose not to involve anyone from the original stage production – a decision Webber considered absurd. He noted that Hooper had done the same thing with the film Les Misérables.
Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a very poor rating of 19%, based on 335 reviews. One critic even called it a “nightmare.”
According to FilmWeek, the movie is incredibly confusing, but strangely compelling – it’s a terrible film, but worth watching anyway.

According to The Atlantic, this film is visually striking, whether you find the images lovely or disturbing, and it truly deserves your full attention.
According to The Spectator, the movie lacks the vibrant, over-the-top energy of the original stage production. However, its oddness is strangely captivating.
It’s strangely wonderful that this movie even exists. Despite its flaws and questionable decisions, it’s filled with moments of genuine brilliance and a bizarre, captivating energy.
