The upcoming HBO series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is generating a lot of buzz as a major event in 2026, though some are anticipating one new character might be a bit awkward. As the series nears its late-year release, fans are getting hints about what to expect in the first season. HBO is promising a darker take on Hogwarts, while still staying true to the original books. However, viewers will have to be patient, as new episodes will be released weekly instead of all at once.
As a huge Harry Potter fan, I was thrilled to watch HBO’s Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic, and it gave me a real sense of just how much love and detail is going into this new series. Apparently, the creative team has been digging deep into the world J.K. Rowling created, and everything – from what the characters wear to the incredibly detailed sets – is packed with little Easter eggs for us Potterheads. Like we suspected from the first trailer, the magic feels very connected to nature, so plants, trees, and all sorts of natural elements play a big role in the potions and spells. And get this – we’re going to see creatures in this series that we’ve never seen in any of the previous Harry Potter or Fantastic Beasts movies – including one that sounds seriously creepy!
‘Harry Potter’ Fans Are About To Meet a Fantastic, if Gruesome, New Beast

The new HBO series based on Harry Potter will feature a wide variety of magical creatures, including some you might remember from the Fantastic Beasts films. According to John Nolan, the Creature Effects Design Supervisor, the show will finally bring a creature mentioned in the books—the Dugbog—to life on screen. This swamp-dwelling carnivore is described as a truly unpleasant beast: it looks like decaying wood when still and a bumpy toad when it’s moving. The Dugbog is an animatronic creation with retractable eyes, a moving tongue, and even branches growing from its back that can be detached for safety around the young actors. As shown in a recent special, the Dugbog is a mossy, wet, and slimy creature you definitely wouldn’t want to encounter in the woods. But it appears Harry and his friends will be facing it at some point.
Sharp-eyed fans of the Wizarding World may recall the Dugbog appearing briefly in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – just as a mention in a newspaper headline. The New York Ghost reported that a non-magical person (a Muggle) was attacked by a Dugbog while hiking near the Great Lakes. Dugbogs usually eat small animals, but sometimes they’ll bite the ankles of people who venture too deep into their territory. Interestingly, their favorite food is the Mandrake, which hints at events in a potential second season of the Fantastic Beasts show. While not fully described in the Harry Potter books, Dugbogs do appear in Half-Blood Prince when Ron accidentally misspells “Dementors” as “Dugbogs” thanks to a malfunctioning Spell-Checking Quill. They’re also enemies in the Hogwarts Legacy video game, along with other Harry Potter games, suggesting that HBO intends to strongly connect the game’s world with the main Potter storyline.
‘Potter’s Gross Beasties Don’t Stop There

The Dugbog isn’t the only strange creature appearing in HBO’s Potter. According to Nolan, the special effects team also created slime-covered Flobberworms for the first season. These plant-eating worms produce a lot of mucus, and they’re as unpleasant as they sound. Despite being harmless herbivores, Flobberworms aren’t completely without purpose in the wizarding world. Their slime can be used to thicken potions like Sleeping Draughts, and they can even be magically turned into fritters served at Hogwarts. (Sounds appetizing?) While characters like Ron find them boring in the books, their gross appearance is sure to fascinate young viewers and disgust their parents.
As a huge Potter fan, I’m seriously excited about the practical effects they’re bringing to the new films! Apparently, they’ve got these fire crabs that actually shoot flames – talk about commitment to the source material! But the thing that really got my attention is Scabbers. They’ve rebuilt the rat animatronic, and Nolan – who worked on Prisoner of Azkaban and Goblet of Fire way back when – says they’ve made huge leaps in technology. He explained that this new Scabbers isn’t clunky and robotic like older versions; it’s much more lifelike. He even thinks it’ll help the new Ron actor, Alastair Stout, feel like he’s interacting with a real animal, even though, obviously, it’s not! They’ve gone so far as to create a ‘biting Scabbers’ that’s apparently terrifying – one of the crew members said it looked like a nightmare hanging off his finger. Seriously, this level of detail is incredible.
The owls designed for the first season of HBO’s upcoming show are almost guaranteed to be a hit. Though they’re robotic, built from metal and plastic, the creators have meticulously studied real owls to make them look incredibly lifelike. A dedicated team focused solely on feathers works to conceal the mechanical parts inside and create a natural appearance. Each owl is covered in a net holding over 36,000 individual feathers. This attention to detail should make Potter a memorable show, despite the challenges the production has faced.
