Netflix continues to double down on its gaming features, introducing new kid-friendly content.
Netflix is introducing a new gaming app called Netflix Playground designed for kids. It will include popular games based on shows like “Playtime With Peppa Pig” and “Sesame Street.” Netflix hopes this app will give parents a safe and educational entertainment option for their children.
Netflix is creating an immersive experience for children, allowing them to go beyond just watching stories and actually become part of them, interacting with the characters they love. According to John Derderian, Netflix’s head of animation and kids’ TV, they aim to make Netflix a central place where kids can discover new things, learn, and play.
Netflix Playground is a collection of games for kids 8 and under, and it’s already included with all Netflix subscriptions. Games like “Storybots,” “The Sneetches,” and “Bad Dinosaurs” can be played without an internet connection. Parents can rest easy knowing there are strong parental controls, and no ads or extra costs. You can download it now in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, the Philippines, and New Zealand, with a worldwide release coming later this month.

This year, Major League Baseball is doing things a little differently for opening day. Instead of having games playing throughout the day, Netflix will be the only place to watch the first game – a matchup between the Yankees and the Giants – on Wednesday.
Netflix, headquartered in Los Gatos, has been building its gaming section since 2021, with varying degrees of success. Popular titles include “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas,” which launched on the platform in 2023 and was downloaded 44 million times, and “Squid Game: Unleashed” (2024), with 21 million downloads. Last year, Netflix also began releasing games based on its TV shows, such as Tetris Time Warp and Pictionary: Game Night. Before this, Netflix games were only available on phones and tablets.
Okay, so Netflix just announced something new called “The Playground,” and it comes on the heels of a price hike, which, ouch. They’ve bumped up the cost of their ad-supported plan by a dollar, making it $8.99 a month. But it’s not just that – the standard plan without ads is now $19.99, a two-dollar increase, and the premium plan is also up two bucks to $26.99. Basically, everything’s getting a little more expensive if you want to keep streaming!
