The Division Resurgence Review: Ubisoft’s ambitious mobile take on its iconic looter shooter

The Division Resurgence is a new role-playing shooter game from Ubisoft Entertainment. Players fight against dangerous groups while trying to rebuild society and help people. In this review, I’ll share my thoughts on the game and give it an honest rating.

I spent 25 hours playing The Division Resurgence on the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra (Android) for this review. This gave me plenty of time to experience the game completely and form a well-rounded, unbiased opinion.

The Division Resurgence delivers a fluid and immersive gameplay experience with a captivating storyline

Let’s talk about how The Division Resurgence plays. I thought the gameplay was excellent! There’s plenty to do, a compelling story, and you get to explore a shared open-world version of New York with both computer-controlled characters and other players.

This game takes place in the universe of The Division and The Division 2, but tells a new, self-contained story. You play as one of the first agents sent in during the outbreak of Green Poison. With cinematic cutscenes showing New York City descending into chaos, your mission is to save civilians and battle dangerous enemy groups.

The story really adds to the game, with engaging conversations, cutscenes, and background details woven into the missions. While you can skip these parts, the storyline is genuinely good and kept me hooked. As someone who enjoyed the earlier games, it also felt wonderfully familiar and brought back a lot of good memories.

This tutorial is straightforward and easy to learn, so you’ll quickly understand how the game works. Plus, it’s really enjoyable! You can try out lots of different weapons, equipment, and specializations as you fight enemy groups throughout the city or compete with and against other players in exciting game modes.

If you enjoy shooting games, you’ll likely love how smoothly this game plays and how easily your character moves – it all feels very refined. This makes each fight exciting and rewarding, instead of feeling the same old thing.

It is content-rich and highly replayable, with standout modes like the Dark Zone

The game offers a lot of replay value. It’s built as a constantly evolving ‘live service,’ meaning you can look forward to frequent updates that add to the story, world, and gameplay challenges.

The game offers plenty to do, including challenging Hostile Nests, dynamic World Events like Hostage Rescues, and the unique Dark Zone. You can experience it all on your own, or team up with friends – it’s up to you how you want to play!

I especially loved the Dark Zone because it combined player-versus-player combat with cooperative gameplay in a thrilling extraction system. I also really enjoyed exploring the open-world environment, discovering hidden locations, Easter eggs, and various collectibles all over New York City.

Impressive audio and visuals held back slightly by frame rate limits

The game’s graphics and sound are excellent. As someone who loves high-quality visuals, I was really impressed with how detailed everything looks, especially when played with the settings maxed out. For a mobile game, the level of detail in the world, environments, and characters is truly impressive.

I was a little let down by the game’s frame rate, which was capped at 30 or 31 frames per second even with the highest graphics settings. Having a 60 FPS option would have significantly improved the smoothness of gameplay, particularly during combat. On the plus side, the audio design is excellent – the voices, gun sounds, and music all work together to create a really immersive experience.

Clean UI and responsive controls enhance the experience of TDR

I really like the user interface in The Division Resurgence. It effectively supports the gameplay without feeling cluttered. While there’s a lot of information displayed, it’s unlocked progressively, which makes it easier to learn and use.

I also really like how the game feels to play. Both moving and shooting are quick and comfortable. Of course, comfort is subjective, but the game lets you customize the controls to fit your own preferences. I didn’t experience any glitches while playing – everything felt smooth whether I was shooting enemies, jumping, or exploring the map. Plus, you have the option to use either a controller or a mouse and keyboard.

While IAPs don’t force you, it can feel quite expensive if you decide to spend

Like most mobile games today, The Division Resurgence lets you buy things within the game, such as the Classified Ops Pass, Sealed Caches, Skin Packs, and items from the Bundle Store. There’s also a Special Offers section with discounted cosmetics and materials. However, I didn’t feel pressured to spend money to advance in the game until I reached the middle stages.

Cosmetics are completely up to you – you can enjoy the game without spending any money! Just by playing the different game modes and trying out the various activities, you’ll naturally earn Character XP, materials, and other currencies.

However, be aware that spending money in this game can add up quickly. The battle pass is pricier than those in popular games like Call of Duty Mobile or PUBG Mobile. Even individual skins and weapon upgrades seem expensive, and that’s coming from someone who regularly makes in-app purchases.

Final Verdict

Overall, The Division Resurgence delivers a great shooting experience on mobile. It features smooth controls, plenty of engaging content, and impressive graphics and sound. Although the limited frame rate and in-app purchases might be drawbacks for some, the game itself is genuinely fun and offers a lot of replay value.

If you like The Division games, enjoy shooter titles in general, or simply want a well-made and engaging first-person shooter on your phone, The Division Resurgence is a great option. Plus, with ongoing updates planned, it should keep you entertained for a long time.
