Disney’s Star Wars is continuing a pattern of revealing Jedi who survived the devastating Order 66. This event, shown in Revenge of the Sith, was a major turning point at the end of the Clone Wars. It’s when Palpatine enacted his plan to eliminate the Jedi, bringing them to the edge of extinction and paving the way for the Galactic Empire.
Following the events of Revenge of the Sith, stories have shown that some Jedi actually survived the Emperor’s deadly Order 66. While the Empire sent its Inquisitors to hunt them down, the vastness of the galaxy and the Jedi’s abilities allowed many to remain hidden. These surviving Jedi ultimately paved the way for Luke Skywalker and the rebellion that eventually overthrew the Empire in the original Star Wars films.
A new Disney+ show, set immediately following the events of Revenge of the Sith, is now revealing the fates of some Jedi who survived Order 66. The series, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, focuses on their stories.
Maul – Shadow Lord Features 2 New Jedi Survivors
The following sections contain spoilers for Maul – Shadow Lord, episodes 1 and 2.
While Maul – Shadow Lord mainly follows Maul as he tries to regain control of his criminal organization, the story also introduces several new characters, including two Jedi who survived Order 66: Devon and Daki. Daki was a Jedi Master who trained Devon as his Padawan before the Jedi Order was destroyed and the Empire took power.
In Maul – Shadow Lord, both characters, like many Jedi at this point in the Star Wars story, are focused on simply staying alive. They’re evading the Empire, keeping a low profile, and searching for a new reason to live on the planet Janix.
The first two episodes of Maul – Shadow Lord reveal a disagreement between Devon and Daki about how to survive. Daki, following Jedi principles, believes in relying on the generosity of others, which often leaves them begging for food and money. Devon, frustrated with this lifestyle, attempts to steal food, leading to her arrest.
It’s interesting how most Star Wars stories about those who survived Order 66 give those characters a significant purpose. We often see them protecting Luke Skywalker, helping to form the Rebel Alliance, or aiding young Jedi. But Devon and Daki’s story is different – it’s simply about trying to stay alive.
Maul – Shadow Lord Teases A Darker Path For Devon
Devon’s story is captivating because her decisions could lead her into dangerous territory. After being split up from Daki and jailed by local authorities under Janix’s control, she’s unexpectedly released by Maul. Maul had been having visions that led him to believe Devon was destined to become his apprentice, which is why he intervened.
So, after capturing Devon, Maul brings her back to his hideout and starts really getting into her head, trying to challenge everything she believes about the galaxy. Interestingly, by the end of the first two episodes of Maul – Shadow Lord, she actually manages to escape using the Force, and it’s almost like Maul wanted her to! It’s a really strange dynamic and makes you wonder what his long game is.
Maul tells Rook Kast that he thinks Devon can help him get back his former power and status. He believes she can even assist in his larger plan to defeat Emperor Palpatine. While other Star Wars tales show Maul ultimately fails to overcome Palpatine, the story of Devon—and the choices she makes—offers a fresh and interesting angle in Maul – Shadow Lord.
Will Devon Become Darth Talon? Maul – Shadow Lord Theory Explained
When the first trailer for Maul – Shadow Lord was released, many fans speculated that the character Devon would essentially become Darth Talon in the official Star Wars story. Darth Talon was a Sith character from the older “Legends” stories. It’s worth noting that George Lucas had actually considered uniting Maul and Talon in a future Star Wars trilogy, but Disney ultimately went in a different direction.
Because of early hints and trailers, many fans believed Devon would eventually become Darth Talon, a character similar to Maul’s apprentice. It’s still unclear if this will happen, as Devon hasn’t yet joined forces with Maul. Plus, their personalities are quite different, so a significant story arc would be needed to convincingly transform her into Talon. However, this theory is likely to stay popular as the series Maul – Shadow Lord unfolds.
Are There Too Many Order 66 Survivors?
The addition of Devon and Daki to the Maul – Shadow Lord comic has sparked a debate about whether there are now too many Jedi who survived Order 66. This question comes up frequently since Disney began creating more Star Wars stories that take place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.
Characters like Ezra Bridger, Kanan Jarrus, Ahsoka Tano, Cal Kestis, Grogu, Kelleran Beq, and even Maul have been revealed as survivors of the Jedi Purge in recent Disney stories. Some fans believe introducing so many survivors diminishes the significance of Order 66, a point Devon and Daki agree with.
This idea has always faced resistance. Considering there were over 10,000 Jedi during the Clone Wars, it’s unlikely Order 66 could have completely wiped them out. Even if Order 66 was highly successful – say, 99% effective – at least 100 Jedi would have survived. That’s significantly more than the number of Jedi who are shown to have survived Order 66 in Star Wars content released since 2012.
The key to a good story about Jedi who survived Order 66 is focusing on compelling characters and narratives. Thankfully, the comic Maul – Shadow Lord seems to be doing just that with Devon and Daki. Their relationship, contrasting perspectives, and the way Maul complicates things create a promising and interesting direction for their story – exactly what fans would hope for.
