While some elements feel familiar, the film avoids predictability thanks to strong performances and a powerful narrative, according to The Guardian. Empire Magazine praised it as both energetic and urgent.

According to Little White Lies, Cal McMau’s first feature film, Wasteman, is intensely realistic, violent, and creates a feeling of being trapped, with its close-up filming style offering no visual relief when things turn violent.

InSession Film highly commended the movie, stating that while more films should attempt such ambitious and challenging ideas, few would succeed as spectacularly. They jokingly suggested it might be best for others not to even try.

According to Time Out, even though Wasteman doesn’t deeply explore the social and political issues within prison life, it’s a powerful story about simply trying to survive. The film highlights that often, the scariest thing about being in prison isn’t the prison itself, but the other people you’re locked up with.

According to The Independent, the role is incredibly demanding, and actor Jonsson powerfully conveys that weight. Meanwhile, The Observer praised director McMau’s skillful and nimble approach.
