I remember when the first Top Gun came out – it was a huge deal! But Top Gun: Maverick in 2022? That movie totally changed things. After COVID really hurt the movie industry, with even big films failing to make money in theaters, Maverick was like a breath of fresh air. It made almost $1.5 billion with a $175 million budget – incredible! I’ve heard they’re already working on another sequel, which is awesome, and it feels like Maverick really saved Hollywood. Things haven’t been perfect at the box office since, but it definitely turned things around after the pandemic started impacting everything.
While its place in Hollywood history definitely boosted the Top Gun franchise, the original 1986 film was successful for many reasons. It was a huge financial hit, earning $357 million (equivalent to $1 billion today) on a $15 million budget (about $44 million today), and it received positive reviews from both critics and audiences. It even earned four Academy Award nominations and won one Oscar. Though often remembered in the shadow of the sequel, the first Top Gun movie is impressive on its own, and remarkably, still holds undiscovered details after 39 years.
Top Gun’s Accuracy Sets It Apart
The Top Gun films are widely praised for their realism and commitment to detail. While actors like Tom Cruise as Lieutenant Maverick certainly contributed to their success, the accuracy of the films has always been their defining feature. Both Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick were made possible by the U.S. Navy, which provided access to aircraft, bases, and even aircraft carriers. Considering the original film’s $15 million budget, it simply wouldn’t have been feasible to create without these resources. Reports indicate that just one of Maverick’s F-14 Tomcats cost around $35 million, making the use of multiple planes prohibitively expensive for any producer without the Navy’s support.
Although it was expensive, the Navy greatly benefited from the deal. They gained valuable resources, but had to allow the military to approve the script to ensure a favorable portrayal. This helped inspire many people over the years to become Navy pilots or join the Navy. In fact, one report found that 24% of new recruits said Top Gun significantly influenced their decision. The movie also increased public awareness of the actual TOPGUN fighter weapons school.
Making the movie required a major commitment, but it resulted in incredible attention to detail, especially with the aircraft Maverick flies. Viewers got to see genuine military fighter jets, flown by skilled pilots, and the actors even did their own flying stunts. Many people wanted a fast-paced, realistic action film, and this movie truly delivered. Following the success of the original, which used authentic military procedures, the filmmakers again worked closely with the Navy and received substantial support. This support went beyond just funding, however; they drew on a wide range of resources.
Top Gun Borrowed Lines From Training Videos
The vast majority of people who watch these films will never join the military, and even fewer will ever be involved with the elite TOPGUN program because of how difficult it is to get in. While audiences appreciate the realistic feel of the movies, they likely won’t be aware of all the subtle details that made them so good. A single line in the film proves this point – after 39 years, most viewers don’t realize it was actually taken from a genuine military training exercise.
In one scene, Commander Viper (Tom Skerritt) explains the rules and purpose of the TOPGUN flight school. He finishes his talk with a memorable line: “Gentlemen, this school is about combat. There are no points for second place.” Maverick, played by Cruise, briefly smiles after hearing this, just before Viper ends the briefing. While this moment seems like a simple, entertaining line, it actually comes from a real source. The line originated in a 1974 training video created to teach Navy pilots how to succeed in aerial combat.
This obscure, 34-minute instructional video is rarely seen. Strangely, near the end, the narrator witnesses a plane crash, then delivers a powerful statement: “Since there are no points for second place in air combat, the F-14 is, by design, a carefully balanced combination of technology and performance, allowing us to handle any challenge from today’s or tomorrow’s enemies.” This memorable line introduces the video’s final recap. Surprisingly, it wasn’t written for a movie—it was originally intended for actual pilots.
There Is a Chance That It Was Just a Coincidence
The link between the line and the training video isn’t strong, and it’s likely the writer just came up with it independently. With so many military training videos available, it’s unrealistic to expect screenwriters to watch them all. A lengthy, and not particularly exciting, video about the F-14 Tomcat is unlikely to be a source of inspiration. While the line, “There are no points for second place,” could have been written without any connection to the video, that would make its origin less interesting.
The video clearly featured the same type of aircraft that Maverick flew. While it’s a long watch at 34 minutes, someone doing thorough research could have easily spent half an hour viewing it, or at least watched the concluding summary. The fact that this line appeared twice seems like a remarkable coincidence, considering the video’s subject. It’s far more probable that the iconic “no points for second place” line from Top Gun originated in this actual Navy training footage. This makes the possibility quite believable, and further demonstrates the movie’s close connection to the Navy, as well as its commitment to realism and memorable lines.
