Pokémon Crossroads’ Three Regions Already Put Winds & Waves To Shame

The new game, Pokémon Winds and Waves, is scheduled for release in 2027. Until then, Pokémon fans have plenty to enjoy, including updated versions of older games created by fans – often called ROM hacks. This is where fan-made games like Pokémon Crossroads really shine, providing unique experiences different from the official Pokémon releases.

You can now play Pokémon Crossroads, a game currently featuring two regions with a third one planned for the complete release. It’s a large-scale project that has the potential to be even more impressive than the next generation of official Pokémon games.

Pokémon Crossroads Brings Kanto, Johto, & Hoenn Together

Pokémon Crossroads currently lets you explore three regions: Hoenn, Kanto, and the Sevii Islands. The Johto region from Generation 2 will be added soon. You can earn 8 badges in both Kanto and Hoenn, and you can easily travel between regions using Pokémon Centers within the game.

You’ll be able to begin your adventure in either Pallet Town from the Kanto region or Littleroot Town from Hoenn. When the Johto region is added, the game will become even larger, with hundreds of Pokémon to collect and a total of 24 Gym Badges to earn. This level of size and content is unprecedented in official Pokémon games, and it may even be more expansive than the new region in Winds and Waves.

Can Pokémon Winds & Waves Compete With Three Regions?

It looks like the map in the new Winds and Waves game will be one continuous region, even if they add more areas later on through downloadable content, similar to what happened in Scarlet and Violet and Sword and Shield. Although leaks hinted at a record-breakingly large map, including potentially endless, randomly generated islands, that doesn’t seem to be true anymore. So, while the game world will be big, it might not be as huge as some people originally thought.

The new generation of Pokémon games will feature open-world exploration, but it will be difficult to match the sheer scope of the first three Pokémon regions, even with modern technology. It’s probably unrealistic to expect a future Pokémon game to let you travel so freely across three distinct areas like that again.

It’s fantastic that we have quality fan-made games like Pokémon Crossroads to satisfy our desire for new Pokémon experiences. While we haven’t seen much of the map in Pokémon Winds and Waves yet, making a direct comparison to the Kanto, Hoenn, and Johto regions is difficult. However, it doesn’t seem likely that the new game will be as expansive as those three regions combined. That said, I definitely recommend checking out Pokémon Crossroads.
