Lily Allen admits her alcohol addiction was so severe she can’t remember having sober sex until she reached her 30s as she opens up about her journey to quitting booze
As a spectator to Lily Allen’s journey, it is truly inspiring to witness her courage and resilience in facing her struggles with addiction. Her honesty and openness about her experiences serve as a beacon of hope for many who may find themselves in similar situations.
Lily Allen admitted that her alcohol dependency reached such extreme levels that she doesn’t recall experiencing sex while sober until she turned 35 years old.
The artist, aged 39, disclosed that she believes she hadn’t experienced sex while sober until she encountered her second spouse, David Harbour.
Lily and the Stranger Things actor met in 2019 and married a year later.
The celebrity, abstaining for five years now, shared with The Times: ‘I hadn’t previously engaged in sexual activities without being under the influence of alcohol until I started my relationship with him. That was a change.’
Back in 2018, the artist finalized her divorce from her first spouse, Sam Cooper. Remarkably, she revealed that from a young age, she had a feeling she would eventually struggle with addiction.
In simpler terms, the singer from Smile shared that some of her first recollections involved alcohol and drugs, and she observed her father, actor Keith Allen, using cocaine.
She said: ‘It didn’t really feel like an “if”, it was a “when”.’
The celebrity also shared insights into her history with alcohol, acknowledging that resorting to self-medication was often a possibility given the strong history of addiction in her family lineage.
The host of the “Miss Me?” podcast has always been open about her struggle with substance abuse, stating that giving up alcohol and drugs was the most beneficial choice she’s ever made in her life.
But in a frank new interview, Lily discussed her relationship with drink and drugs.
Over time, movie star Keith, aged 71, has openly discussed his struggle with drug addiction, as evidenced by reports detailing Lily’s recollection of her earliest memories being centered on illicit substances.
Speaking about her predestined journey, Lily expressed, “Given that addiction seems to run strongly within my family, I felt it was only a matter of time before self-medication became a part of my life. It wasn’t a question of ‘if’, but rather ‘when’.
The artist known for hits like “The Smile,” who has taken on a role as an ambassador for the addiction charity, Forward Trust, subtly indicated that exposure to alcohol and drugs during her upbringing made her feel ‘vulnerable.’ She further shared that maintaining her sobriety is crucial because it ensures her children grow up feeling secure.
Lily, mother of Marnie (age 11) and Ethel (age 13), who was previously married to Sam Cooper, expressed: “The most important aspect is that my children feel secure. In contrast to my own insecure upbringing, they experience a sense of safety.
Indeed, it is her children who help keep her on the right path, with Lily quipping that her children ‘monitor’ her AA meeting attendance.
The television personality, residing in New York with her family consisting of her daughters and husband David (age 49), admitted that her girls frequently inquired about her attendance at meetings. Her children understand that maintaining sobriety is not effortless, acknowledging it as something requiring dedication, a fact that Lily emphasizes the importance of prioritizing.
Maybe what keeps Lily focused on her daughters could be traced back to a pivotal, eye-opening experience from her past, when she found herself at her lowest ebb during her struggle with alcohol.
In her conversation, Lily mentioned an incident where, after discovering her ex-spouse was dating someone else, she intoxicatedly visited his residence intending to argue. This encounter initially shocked her offspring.
As a conscientious follower, I admit to having lost myself in the depths of excess. In a moment of turmoil, I found myself at his doorstep, my words escalating into a loud outburst that disrupted the peaceful slumber of his children. The memory of their frightened eyes still haunts me. They recall that incident clearly, and they understand that in such states, their mother is not her best self. It’s crucial for me to steer clear of circumstances where I might find myself in a similar predicament.
She has now been sober for almost five years, previously revealing that the last time she consumed alcohol was July 28, 2019.
After disclosing earlier this year, Lily’s statements were made following her acknowledgment that her commitment to abstinence stems from understanding the potential losses she faces if she resorts to drinking once more.
On their podcast “Miss Me?”, Lily shared that her determination to remain sober stems from the numerous positive aspects in her life.
She confessed that if she resumed drinking, she believes she stands to lose significant aspects of her life, such as her home, her relationships with her two daughters and her spouse.
Miquita, aged 39, commended her friend for resisting the urge to drink while they were both at the pub, and wondered if she’d share her secret with her.
Lily responded: “To be honest, I’ve just grown accustomed to it after almost five years without it, which will be five and a half years this summer. I haven’t discovered any hidden secrets about it.
During the initial stages of abstinence, I was quite busy, regularly attending meetings, completing my recovery tasks, following a guidance from a mentor, all in an effort to maintain sobriety.
During the lockdown, I found myself skipping face-to-face meetings altogether. To be honest, I hadn’t attended many gatherings before the lockdown either, and since then, I’ve largely continued to avoid them. Occasionally, I do join virtual meetings to stay connected.
She added: ‘Given that I currently enjoy the advantages, I’m aware of all I might forfeit should I resume drinking, and that’s everything.’
Currently, I can’t imagine my life being any better than it currently is. With a stunning home, content children who thrive and are actively involved, strong bonds with them, a harmonious marriage, financial stability, and numerous creative avenues, life is truly fulfilling for me.
‘Everything is good and I don’t think that would be the case if I wasn’t sober.’
Lily mentioned: ‘To begin with, I rarely experience cravings. However, there are instances when I’m at a restaurant during the summer and someone orders a stunning, crisp glass of white wine. In those moments, I might find myself saying, “Oh that looks appealing,” but then I quickly remind myself that your home is equally attractive too!’
She also joked that the biggest benefit of sobriety was the lack of ‘beer fear’ the next day after a night out.
She mentioned, “When you awaken and think, ‘I realize I may have upset many folks, but I can’t quite recall the specifics.’
Miquita asked: ‘Is that one of the beauties of sobriety is that you never have that worry again?’
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but agree – it’s nearly top tier! The most dreadful moment for me is waking up the following day, hazy on events, only to be haunted later by the memories of what transpired.
‘Like oh s***t did I really tell that person that? I am such an idiot!’
