Outlander season 7 episode 10 takes the story to places I didn't think it would (Review)

As a long-time Outlander fan, let me tell you, this week’s episode was a rollercoaster of emotions! With my heart pounding like a drum after each twist and turn, I found myself clinging to the edge of my seat, barely able to breathe. The bond between Jamie and Claire, so beautifully portrayed, left me in tears as their shared pain echoed through the screen.

This week marks the airing of episode 10 from season 7 of “Outlander,” titled “Brotherly Love.” The pace is intense, and emotions run high. As we approach the final stages of this season on Starz, it’s delivering a powerful punch with its mix of feelings and intricate storylines. Given the grandeur of this historical drama, was there ever any doubt? Let’s dive into the review. I identify as a fan who has only followed the show.

Wow, it was inevitable yet still devastating that Ian has left us. He was such a significant and cherished figure on the series, truly exceptional! Watching him and Jamie grow up, from young lads to spending time together, brought tears to my eyes. The ninth episode primarily revolved around Young Ian and his parents, as it rightfully should have. It was heartening to see Jamie and Ian reunited in this one too. I must admit, I could’ve used a few more scenes between them. The moments we had were touching, but I yearned for more.

In Philadelphia, Claire and Young Ian make their entrance, finding themselves in quite a predicament. To be specific, let’s focus on Claire, the exceptional doctor she is, known for her remarkable skills by both Lord John Grey and us. Upon arrival, she takes charge to help Lord Henry Grey, his nephew. However, what puzzles me is how he managed to survive for five weeks until her arrival. Given that the three surgeries she performed were unsuccessful, it seems a bit unrealistic for him to have held on if his condition was as grave as described in Lord John’s letter.

It was nice to watch Claire and Denzell engaged in their medical discussions. It’s not common to see this side of Claire, but it’s always great when it happens. I also find it endearing that Denzel is so eager to learn from her. His enthusiasm during the surgery was hilarious. I even chuckled when Lord John had to avert his eyes during the operation; maybe he should have waited outside with Rachel and William instead. By the way, let’s not forget about those two…

They’ve developed a strong bond, and it’s evident that William harbors feelings towards her. However, Rachel is preoccupied with Young Ian. Fortunately, they are brought back together, albeit not on the best of terms initially. Unfortunately, Arch Bug appears and threatens Rachel. Keep your hands off of her! I will defend anyone who lays a hand on Rachel. Young Ian is present but unable to intervene without endangering Rachel further. However, William steps in to save the day. Bravo, bravo. Farewell Mr. Bug, glad we’ll never have to deal with you again.

In a charming turn of events, young Ian and Rachel appear to be deeply smitten with one another. Given that Ian is a Mohawk warrior and Rachel is a Quaker, their circumstances may seem challenging. However, the depth of their feelings for each other seems undeniable, and I have no doubt they’ll find a way to navigate their relationship successfully. I’m rooting for them fiercely!

For a brief moment, let’s shift our focus to Roger and Buck. The return of Geillis Duncan and Dougal MacKenzie is quite familiar, much like we remember them. Before Roger’s arrival, Geillis playfully flirts with him, seemingly unaware of his identity, which provides an amusing twist. In these specific scenes, it was delightful to gain insight into Roger’s inner thoughts, making the moments even more engaging. As for poor Buck, he and Geillis seem to intuitively understand each other, but Roger chooses not to disclose the truth to him. Considering the details about Geillis’ blood sacrifices and her unsettling behavior that Roger previously shared, it might be wise to withhold this information.

It took me some time to fully grasp that Geillis had been married to Arthur Duncan for such an extended period. Keep in mind that Roger and Buck are in the year 1939, while young Jamie is studying abroad in France. Yet, it’s no surprise that Geillis and Dougal were instantly attracted to each other. They even began moving towards the bedroom without having previously met! Isn’t that just like them? Before this, the war chief handed Roger military dog tags, which turned out to be for his father. Incredible! So, does this mean he’s also a time-traveler? What an unexpected plot twist! Why didn’t he ever return to his own time and family? So many intriguing questions!

In this episode, we delve into the political turmoil that always seems to entangle Claire and Jamie. This time, it lands Claire in deep trouble. You see, Mercy Woodcock, a free black woman, was married to Walter – the man Claire attempted to help at Fort Ticonderoga, but unfortunately, he passed away.

In the world of gaming, that nerve-wracking instant when a tragic twist unfolds – much like in the trailers for Outlander’s season 7 part 2 and episode 9 – has finally arrived for me, my character, and it’s not a moment I welcome. The news comes through: the ship Jamie embarked upon to reunite with Claire and America lies at the bottom of the sea now, a tragic loss confirmed by the manifest bearing his name. And there, amidst the despair, we know that Jamie was on board. Alas, there were no survivors.

It’s clear that Claire doesn’t doubt it, as she’s aware that their bond is so strong that she would have sensed something, since her heart would react similarly. Indeed, Jamie and Claire are that deeply connected, we all understand that she would have felt something. Moreover, considering the promotional materials, trailers, Sam Heughan’s interviews about their storyline this season, it seems evident that Jamie won’t be dying off.

Wow, the collection of memories between Claire and Jamie and the intense sorrow it brought about left me speechless. Granted, I understand that we’re witnessing Claire dealing with this emotionally taxing situation, but I could have done without seeing so much of it. In fact, as Claire was vocalizing her pain, I found myself doing the same. It was a truly heart-wrenching scene, but there was one aspect that took away from the impact – the ocean wave graphics felt somewhat out of place and could have been omitted.

In a turn of unfortunate events, it seems that Claire’s decision to deliver that letter may have serious repercussions. The British officials have apprehended her, and they are considering arresting her over the matter. Worse still, Lord John mentions the possibility of her being sentenced to death if found guilty.

Initially, she seems indifferent. Without Jamie by her side, life holds little appeal. However, when he discloses that Young Ian, Rachel, Denzell, and even Mercy could also be implicated, it prompts her to consider a particular offer. For their safety, Lord John is prepared to wed Claire. Once more, she finds herself in a situation where marriage is thrust upon her, not just for her own protection, but for the sake of those she cherishes deeply as well.

Wow! I didn’t see that coming at all! What on earth is happening? It seems like Jamie’s return is going to be nothing short of chaotic and messy. After all, we all know he’s not truly gone, right? This turn of events promises to be quite the dramatic rollercoaster. I find myself struggling to wrap my head around it all. Thank goodness a new episode isn’t due out for another week; I could use some time to mull over what’s in store. Ughhh, indeed!
