Influencer Sarah’s Day rushes newborn son Harlow to hospital for controversial last-minute surgery
As a dedicated follower of Sarah’s Day, I find myself deeply moved by her recent struggles as a mother. Having been a parent myself, I can only imagine the overwhelming emotions she must be experiencing. It’s heartbreaking to see her wishing away her newborn’s life due to the challenges they are facing together.
According to recent confirmation, Sarah revealed that she scheduled a contentious operation for her newly-born child, Harlow, one month following his delivery.
32-year-old YouTube personality named Sarah Stevenson, who goes by the channel name ‘Lifestyle Youtuber’, announced the news to her 1.2 million Instagram followers on a Thursday post.
She expressed gratitude, in a post accompanying a brief video, to all those who reached out to her the previous night.
‘Last night was one of our worst nights with almost zero sleep.’
Sarah gave birth to her third child with her husband Kurt Tilse in late October.
She and her partner Kurt, who are parents to Fox (aged 5) and Malakai (2), had a home birth of their new baby, an experience they captured in Polaroid images as they rejoiced in the joyous occasion.
Sarah mentioned that she has scheduled her infant, Harlow, for a contentious procedure on lip or tongue ties in about three weeks from now.
Remarkably, I received a call from the surgeon suggesting that if we managed to arrive within two hours, the operation could be performed that very same afternoon.
A tongue-tie is when the tissue under the tongue restricts its movements and functions.
Approximately three percent of newborns experience tongue-tie, a condition that sometimes has a familial pattern. This condition tends to be more prevalent among male infants. (Paraphrased)
According to Queensland Health, improper latching or sucking issues in infants during breastfeeding can potentially cause weight gain problems due to inefficient feeding.
A General Practitioner might recommend a procedure called frenotomy, which involves cutting the band beneath the tongue (known as the lingual frenulum), to make it simpler for the tongue to move around freely.
Sarah went on, expressing in her heartfelt post, “I implore everyone to ask for divine guidance to navigate through this difficult predicament we find ourselves in. May this be the resolution for our struggles and the relief for Harlow.
‘Things are getting worse and none of us are coping very well.’
On Wednesday evening, Sarah shared that she indeed visited an osteopath, suggested by her sibling, with her baby Harlow. This professional diagnosed that Harlow has lip and tongue ties.
In her posts, she expressed that she thinks this issue might be the reason behind his frequent acid reflux, irritable moods, and poor sleeping habits.
The influencer mentioned that she would start crying at the thought of having to perform four-hourly treatments on Harlow’s wounds after surgery, as suggested by the osteopath.
‘I feel so overwhelmed and anxious with what to do,’ she wrote.
In a follow-up post made at 2.39am on Thursday morning, she said she’d been up since 11.40pm with her baby and that ‘Mummy is at breaking point.’
In a recent post, the mother of three openly admitted that the feedback from her supporters, including their comments and messages, played a significant role in helping her reach the final decision to undergo the surgery.
I’ve decided to proceed with the tongue-tie release appointment scheduled for three weeks from now, as I’m at my limit and require immediate relief.
In an unexpected turn, she expressed, ‘This isn’t fun at the moment and it’s making me extremely sad; I find myself longing for his new life instead of his newborn one.’
2020 saw a collective appeal from 13 medical organizations in Australia, including the Australian College of Midwives and the Australian Dental Association, advising families to consult professionals to confirm if a limited frenum (tissue connection under the tongue or lip) is indeed causing any issues for infants.
This surge is due to an unusually high number of Medicare frenotomy claim requests, a situation that healthcare professionals and researchers have noted exceeds the estimated 2-10% of the population dealing with this particular issue.
Based on Medicare records, approximately 53,000 frenectomies were performed in Australia between 2006 and 2016. During this period, the rate increased significantly from 1.22 per 1000 children to 6.35 per 1000 children. However, it’s important to note that this figure may underestimate the actual number because it does not account for procedures carried out in public hospitals or by dentists.
Douglas posits that there are substantial issues related to excessive diagnosis and unnecessary treatment concerning tongue-ties in Australia. (or)
