Sniper Elite: Resistance is More of the Same Sandbox Nazi-Blasting Action – Preview

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that “Sniper Elite: Resistance” is a delightful addition to the World War II sniping genre. Having been a devoted fan since the early days, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia as I delve back into the familiar yet refreshing gameplay that the series offers.

It appears that Karl Fairburne isn’t the sole elite sniper operating during World War II; his comrade Harry Hawker is also in action. Using his keen vision effectively, he’s taking out Nazi targets with precision, hitting vital areas like heads, lungs, hearts, testicles, intestines, and other bodily parts with rapid-fire bullets. This is Sniper Elite: Resistance, the sequel to Sniper Elite 5. The story unfolds concurrently with Fairburne’s adventures in occupied France, but this time it’s Hawker making his way through… occupied France. While there’s a new sniper on the scene, we’re perfectly happy with the continuation of the series.

Engaging in the third mission of the game, we find ourselves alongside Hawker on the outskirts of a quaint French town, divided by a river and a fortified trainyard under heavy guard. Starting from a safe vantage point on a balcony, it’s wise to survey your environment using Hawker’s binoculars, marking any enemies as you spot them. It quickly becomes clear that this is classic Sniper Elite gameplay, and the distant glint of an enemy sniper sends a surge of adrenaline – I can’t help but want to take them down with a headshot right away, forgetting that the gunfire could reveal my location to everyone.

As I unleashed my attack, I could see my strike play out in stunning slow-motion, the gruesome aftermath displayed by the game’s iconic x-ray camera – skull fragments shattered and scattered, brains ruptured and oozed, eyes bulged before popping, and the bullet was flattened on its exit. It’s still just as brutal and satisfyingly gory. But now, every foe in the vicinity is charging towards me, thanks to my less-than-intelligent actions. There’s a catch with this demo though – since it’s an early build, there are no save points or respawns. So each failure means restarting the mission from the very beginning. However, rest assured that won’t be the case in the final version of the game.

The task at hand requires us to get to Hotel Terminus, approximately 700 meters distant, crossing the river, then navigating through roads and structures on the opposite side. It’s a tricky journey, with Gestapo patrolling the riverside trainyard, making it necessary to avoid their watchful eyes, sniper sights, and flickering spotlights. Once you make it across the bridge, more Nazi resistance awaits. In the games Sniper Elite and Resistance, breaking stealth is rarely a good move, as it quickly leads to a shootout, often resulting in being outflanked and severely outgunned. Unless you can somehow escape to safety, death is imminent.

The idea is to investigate suspicious cargo being transported via the railways, forming part of a bigger picture surrounding a secret Nazi superweapon that could turn the tide of the war. Again, it’s classic Sniper Elite fare, and a more than adequate excuse to delve into another selection of sandboxes brimming with opportunities. There are infiltration and exfiltration points and, new to Resistance, sneaky Kill List targets hiding away on each map. We also have Propaganda missions, initiated via in-game posters, which present you with a race against time to eliminate enemies. There will be plenty to do in Sniper Elite: Resistance, then, beyond the main objectives.

If you’ve been yearning for more thrilling “Sniper Elite” gameplay since the release of “Sniper Elite 5” in 2022, then “Sniper Elite: Resistance” delivers more of that sleek and tactical sandbox playstyle with a few adjustments to the traditional recipe. Spending a satisfying two hours with “Resistance” confirms that this is comfortably familiar ground that doesn’t veer too far from the core elements that define “Sniper Elite” as distinctly “Sniper Elite.” This explanation likely explains why the game isn’t called “Sniper Elite 6” – it seems that the developers, Rebellion, may have larger plans for the next numbered sequel. There are few things more consistently enjoyable than witnessing a bullet exit the barrel of your rifle, following its trajectory to the target, and then watching the gruesome aftermath unfold before your eyes.

As a gamer, I’m eagerly anticipating the release of Sniper Elite: Resistance in January 2025. It seems destined to press all the right gaming triggers for me, and I can hardly wait to dive into the game and preserve my hard-earned progress!
