Star Trek: The Original Series actor reprises his role nearly 60 years later
As a gamer who has spent countless hours navigating the vast cosmos of Star Trek and its intricate lore, I must say that the return of Gary Lockwood as Gary Mitchell in the Roddenberry Archive short film was nothing short of breathtaking. It’s not every day you get to see a beloved character from your childhood reappear on screen after decades!
The lore around Star Trek’s pilot is fascinating, as the one that everyone saw originally was actually the second one filmed. The original was called The Cage and it featured a vastly different array of characters than the one that made it to air. This quick glimpse is made convincing through both digital and physical special effects, ensuring that the character resembling Mitchell isn’t simply a stand-in, much like actor Sam Witwer, who portrayed Captain Kirk in the same short film, stood in for William Shatner.
Actually, it’s not the same character at all. Through the use of digital technology, prosthetics, and other techniques, Lockwood managed to portray a younger version of Mitchell once more. This marks his return to the Star Trek series after many years.
In the initial series, Lockwood delivered an exceptional performance that left a lasting impression. Although his most significant role might be as Dave Bowman in 2001: A Space Odyssey, we will forever associate him with his chilling portrayal of a man who lost his humanity and gained divinity, particularly in the Star Trek pilot.
