Phasmophobia Review - A Chilling Co-Op Horror Game That Will Test Your Nerve

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for horror titles and an unhealthy obsession with the supernatural, I can confidently say that Phasmophobia has sent shivers down my spine like no other game in recent memory. This isn’t your typical haunted house romp; it’s a stripped-down, minimalist terror trip that leaves you vulnerable and exposed, armed only with a flashlight and a spirit box radio.

Phasmophobia offers a chilling, simplified experience of fear. You, along with up to three teammates, venture into ordinary-looking homes armed with tools to find and document spectral entities. As a ghost hunter, you’re tasked with bravely opening doors, measuring EMF levels to sense spectral presence, and finally escaping with concrete evidence that something malevolent dwells within the house you’ve been called to inspect. This is pure, stripped-down horror, and it works brilliantly.

A Learning or Training Phase guides you through the intricacies of being a ghost hunter, teaching you how to handle essential equipment such as the spirit box radio for interacting with spirits, UV light, camera, D.O.T.S projector that illuminates specters, and what we commonly know as a flashlight. To begin with, these items make up your initial set of tools. The income generated from your services can be utilized to purchase additional equipment like a Polaroid camera, motion sensor, parabolic microphone, and psychological medication to prevent mental instability.

Upon selecting a contract from the display board, you’ll navigate to the specified location, arriving in your spacious and well-equipped van (reminiscent of the Mystery Machine). From there, you’ll decide on three items to bring inside the house. Since you can only carry three things at once, you’ll need to consider the tasks ahead and choose what’s necessary for completion. Once ready, you’ll cautiously open the front door, glancing inside before awkwardly entering. The moment you step out of the well-lit truck, the situation feels tense.

You can encounter various kinds of supernatural entities, such as Demons, Jinn, Oni, Raiju, Banshees, Revenants, Poltergeists, among others. Each of these entities has its own malicious behavior. Some may bother you by making dreadful noises, while others might manifest easily, providing an opportunity to capture them on camera or gather some form of proof before hastily leaving the area. Remember, ghosts can sneak up on you and touch your eyes with their diseased grey fingers, whisking you away to a realm of the deceased.

In the eerie silence of the ‘dead zone’, I found myself in an otherworldly realm filled with bizarre anomalies and a chilling presence lurking in the shadows. The contract I embarked on failed, but that doesn’t mean it’s game over. Instead, I got another chance to step back in and try my luck again.

Playing solo can be challenging as maintaining composure becomes tough to sustain for an extended period, especially if you’re easily spooked like me and bolt at the slightest ghostly sight. Occasionally, a ghost might slam the front door shut, leaving you trapped while it advances, which is undeniably terrifying. However, joining forces with friends in cooperative mode can make the experience incredibly fun as your team of explorers fumbles around, ready to react at the slightest hint of a spirit. And remember, these aren’t friendly Casper-like spirits we’re dealing with – they are phantoms known for forcing people out of their homes.

If you’ve got the nerve to step foot inside the chilling abode of a spectral terror, Phasmophobia will undoubtedly keep you on edge. For those who shudder at the thought of horror, this early access game by Kinetic Games might be best left untouched. But missing out on it would be a pity, because Phasmophobia is a unique kind of fear – a haunted house and you, completely at the mercy of a spirit. There are no weapons, nothing substantial to cling to beyond your ghost-hunting gadgets, and no chance of survival if you’re discovered. As you cautiously creep into that eerie child’s room, with shadows playing on the walls as your flashlight sweeps across, and hearing something, then seeing your breath fog up in front of you, there’s only one option – make a swift exit.

Although Phasmophobia is still in an early access phase, its console debut appears remarkably refined, albeit with some minor issues related to controls and sticky doors. Featuring limitless replay value, team-based gameplay for up to four players, and plenty of room for pure excitement, it’s hard to find another game quite like it. This makes it an ideal Halloween delight.
