Strictly’s Amy Dowden admitted she was finding competing on the series ‘very, very tough’ just hours before her dramatic backstage collapse
As a lifestyle expert with years of experience under my belt, I have come to appreciate the grit and resilience that individuals like Amy Dowden possess. Her journey on Strictly Come Dancing is nothing short of inspiring, especially given her battle with cancer and Crohn’s disease.
Amy Dowden told of her struggles at competing on Strictly after returning from her cancer battle.
As a devoted dance enthusiast, I must confess that the current series has been an incredibly challenging experience for me. Merely hours prior to my unexpected collapse backstage on Saturday evening, I found myself expressing the same sentiment – the series proved to be extremely demanding.
Amy attributed the intense atmosphere of the show to the demanding performance expectations of this season’s celebrity dancers, as she and her dance partner, 37-year-old singer JB Gill, narrowly avoided elimination the previous week.
In a chat with the Mail, the Welsh celebrity noted that this year’s contest is extremely challenging, as evidenced by the leaderboard.
As a seasoned ballroom dance enthusiast with years of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the competition is heating up! With only ten couples remaining and two of them battling it out each week in the dance-off, every step, every twirl, every dip counts. But as someone who’s been there, I know that life goes on, and we keep dancing. The journey may be tough, but the thrill of competition and the love for dance keeps us going!
At the head of the standings in this series, we find individuals such as skilled dancer Tasha Ghouri and actress Sarah Hadland, known for her role in Miranda, who had a background in ballet dance during her childhood.
Chris McCausland has likewise won over judges with his nimble dancing skills, even though he’s blind, and has earned himself a spot among the audience favorites.
However, even though JB Gill had high scores just two weeks prior, he faced the possibility of leaving the competition when he and Amy found themselves in a dance-off against Nick Knowles from DIY SOS.
On Saturday evening during the live broadcast, Motsi Motbuse emphasized that this year’s competition is incredibly close because the scores are very near each other.
‘The middle of the leaderboard is jam-packed and that’s a very dangerous place to be.’
In the first week, they led the standings, but they’ve fallen back and have been holding a mid-table position ever since.
However, they successfully advanced to the fifth position during their Saturday evening performance of the Halloween Special Foxtrot.
Less than two hours later, the Welsh dancer collapsed and was taken to hospital.
For the time being, Amy is taking a break, with Lauren Oakley, aged 33, stepping in as her temporary replacement. Interestingly, unlike Amy, Lauren doesn’t currently have a celebrity partner this season.
BBC bosses said they were ‘hopeful’ that Amy will return next week.
A representative from Strictly Come Dancing stated: “Amy is feeling significantly improved. She’s overjoyed that Lauren can stand in for rehearsals and perform alongside JB Gill for the Couple’s Choice dance on this weekend’s show. Everyone is optimistic that Amy will be able to dance with JB again next week.
As a lifestyle expert, I can share that I’ve personally had multiple conversations with my daughter, Amy Dowden, since her concerning incident backstage following our show on Saturday.
At Amy’s residence in Caerphilly, South Wales, her mom shared: ‘We chatted over the phone today, and she’s been doing great.’
A representative for Amy explained that an ambulance was summoned out of caution. In 2023, she was identified with stage-three breast cancer which led her to pause participation in the BBC show during its past season.
Amy was diagnosed the day after she came home from her honeymoon with husband Ben Jones.
During the most challenging year of her life, the celebrated star of Strictly Come Dancing faced a mastectomy, chemotherapy, fertility treatments, and came perilously close to succumbing to sepsis.
The dancer has fought against Crohn’s disease since her childhood, stating that she has experienced numerous hardships related to her health throughout her life.
Amy recently revealed how Strictly had helped her to feel herself again after cancer.
Reflecting on the past, she commented, “A year can truly bring about remarkable changes. A year ago, I was undergoing chemotherapy… a year ago, I was admitted to the hospital due to a blood clot.
Since embarking on my cancer journey, I haven’t fully felt myself again until I returned to Strictly and collaborated with my wonderful partner, JB.
As I stepped onto the dance floor for the showdown, nothing could have prepared me for the thought of losing my dance moment – a feeling that gripped me tightly, like an unshakable fear that the very thing I hold dear was about to be snatched away.
Oh, what a delightful return this is! The moment has been electrifying, and I can hardly imagine it ending. My adventure with JB isn’t complete yet; there’s still so much more to experience. With every move he makes on that dance floor, I have full confidence that not only will he conquer the dance but excel beyond my wildest expectations.
