Why Clint Eastwood’s final movie Juror #2 is getting ‘buried’ at the box office

Why Clint Eastwood's final movie Juror #2 is getting 'buried' at the box office

As an ardent admirer of Clint Eastwood’s illustrious seven-decade career, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia and a hint of disbelief as I read about the limited release of his grand finale film, Juror #2. The man who brought us iconic films like A Fistful of Dollars and Unforgiven is now facing a seemingly meager screen presence for his swansong.

In a surprising move, Clint Eastwood’s final film as Juror #2 will have a restricted initial release, sparking speculation that his long-term studio ally, Warner Bros., may harbor doubts about the movie’s potential box office performance.

Legendary actor and filmmaker, now 94 years old, is concluding his illustrious seven-decade career in cinema with a movie starring Nicholas Hoult. This film will debut at AFI Fest on October 27, but it’s expected to be screened in fewer than 50 theaters according to two sources, as reported by Variety.

At present, screenings of Juror #2 are scheduled at four different venues in New York City, five in Los Angeles, and a single location in Chicago. Pre-sale tickets are available in more than two dozen major U.S. cities.

Canada’s Cineplex is opening the film in one theater in Toronto and 160 nationwide venues.

It is claimed there are no current plans to expand to more locations in the following weeks.

A representative from the studio announced that “Juror #2” will be distributed in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy, and Germany, receiving backing from Warner Bros. throughout its release.

The movie will become eligible for consideration during the 2025 awards season once it’s released, however, its distribution seems to be under greater scrutiny compared to films like Anora and The Brutalist.

Catching everyone off guard, Warner Bros released the movie’s trailer a full month prior to its scheduled premiere.

Originally intended for a streaming debut, according to a source, Juror #2 instead moved towards a theatrical release following the viewing of the movie, which was made with a production budget around $30 million.

According to a reliable insider, Warner Bros.’ choice to release the movie in cinemas can be seen as a token of appreciation towards Eastwood, given that numerous of his films have grossed billions worldwide and earned countless Oscars.

Reports suggest that Warner Bros. might choose an unusual strategy by not disclosing the box office earnings for the movie.

It is reported that Warner Bros. does not view the film as a strong contender for major Oscars, despite Clint Eastwood having won four Academy Awards. He earned the Best Picture and Best Director awards for “Unforgiven” in 1993, and again won in those same categories for “Million Dollar Baby” in 2005.

2021 saw the release of Eastwood’s final film, “Cry Macho,” where he both directed and acted. Regrettably, this production did not perform well at the box office, falling short of its $33 million budget by a significant margin, as it only managed to earn $16.5 million worldwide.

The movie became a subject of debate within the studio following WarnerMedia’s merger with Discovery, Inc., with CEO David Zaslav reportedly inquiring about its production given concerns that it might not generate a profit.

DailyMail.com has contacted Warner Bros. for comment.

In the character of Jury Number 2, portrayed by the actor from The Unforgiven (who appeared rather weak in March), takes on Nicholas Hoult’s role, depicting a man undergoing a shocking revelation during his time as a juror.

Over time, the character comes to realize that he might bear some responsibility for the fatal car crash, which is central to the ongoing murder trial.

He’s faced with a tense situation where he must choose between maintaining his reputation or assisting an innocent person to be found not guilty.

The post-production for the film was completed in the spring, and it’s been reported by Variety that Warner Bros, the studio responsible, is “delighted” after viewing the footage.

Hoult leads an impressive ensemble featuring Toni Collette, Zoey Deutch, Kiefer Sutherland, JK Simmons, Leslie Bibb, and Chris Messina.

The film experienced numerous obstacles on its journey to completion; production was halted for several months last year due to the Hollywood writers’ strike.

Moreover, several production studios apparently turned down the project initially until Eastwood eventually found a place for it at Warner Bros.
