Paramount is trying to make Star Trek: Section 31 their Guardians of the Galaxy

As a lifelong Trekkie with memories of the original series etched into my very soul, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment when I see Star Trek: Section 31 being marketed as a light-hearted, Guardians of the Galaxy-esque adventure. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good joke as much as the next person, but this feels like a misstep, to say the least.

In every direction you turn, promotions for Star Trek: Section 31 appear to depict the movie as a replica of Guardians of the Galaxy or SyFy’s under-the-radar sci-fi series, Killyjoys. These productions, like the Marvel film and the SyFy show, have assembled an exceptional yet unusual ensemble, with one group comprising a motley crew who combat crime on their spaceship, while the other is a trio of bounty hunters.

As a gamer, I can’t help but notice the shift in humor lately – it feels like we’ve got an overload of witty, sarcastic characters reminiscent of Tony Stark. It’s almost as if every new show or movie is trying to be the next Guardians of the Galaxy with their dry jokes and snarky banter. And let’s not forget Star Trek: Section 31 – it seems to be heading down a similar path. It’s like they’re all trying to MCU-fy humor, and I can’t help but wonder if this is a good thing or just too much of a good thing.

Characterized by amusing personalities and sharp comebacks, it appears that the previews are marketing it like a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie within the realm of Star Trek. If this is true, one might question the sensitivity of those in charge of Star Trek production.

Initially, it’s clear that emulating a hit like Lower Decks doesn’t enhance your reputation; rather, it can diminish it. You risk being perceived as imitators instead of pioneers. Instead of trying to capitalize on past successes, it’s more beneficial to blaze your own trail and move forward with original ideas.

In the second place, it’s common knowledge among fans that Starfleet’s Section 31 is one of the most contentious elements of the franchise, serving as a stark contrast to Gene Roddenberry’s ideals about what society might become. A subtle but powerful assertion that Roddenberry’s vision was flawed, perhaps even unattainable. The methods employed by Section 31 within Starfleet have led fans to distance themselves from the division, as they are reluctant to glorify or justify such a questionable and potentially harmful entity.

Audience members were extremely frustrated when it was announced a film focusing on this ruthless team was being made. What’s more, they’re outraged that this new movie is portraying them as a motley crew attempting to save the universe. These characters are cold, emotionless individuals who prioritize their mission above all else. It seems fitting to present them as antagonists in order to effectively incorporate this group into the storyline.

However, the backstory of the group’s formation appears to hint at an interstellar adventure filled with humor and unpredictability. But isn’t something more serious or grounded preferred?
