Idris Elba plans to move to Africa to boost film industry in Ghana, Tanzania and beyond

As a film enthusiast with a deep appreciation for the power of cinema, I find myself utterly captivated by Idris Elba’s vision and commitment to nurturing Africa’s film industry. Born to parents from Ghana and Sierra Leone, Elba carries within him the rich tapestry of African culture that he seeks to share with the world.

Idris Elba is no absentee boss.

To further boost Africa’s movie sector, a renowned actor who has won a Golden Globe is aiming to establish film production facilities in Ghana and Tanzania within the coming ten years. He believes that this ambitious project is beyond his reach with an address in London.

As a passionate cinephile, I’m eagerly stepping up to support our film industry – it’s a decade-long endeavor, as I shared with the BBC during a recent interview. To make this vision a reality, I can’t work from afar; I need to be immersed in the heart of the action, right here on the continent.

The actor famously known as “Luther” shared his intention to relocate within the next 5-10 years, if all goes well, and he aims to explore various destinations such as Accra (Ghana), Freetown (Sierra Leone), and Zanzibar (Tanzania). His goal is to immerse himself in regions where compelling narratives are being shared.

Elba’s father was from Sierra Leone and his mother was from Ghana.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I, along with other Tanzanian authorities, have secured over 200 acres of land in the enchanting island of Zanzibar for a project close to my heart – a film studio! Dubbed as West African Studios, this cinematic marvel is set to rival the likes of Hollywood, Nollywood, or Bollywood. With the right investments and hard work, it could very well establish itself as “Zollywood,” adding another exciting chapter to the world of cinema.

For approximately three to four years, we’ve been developing a blueprint for a project aimed at establishing a central hub for filmmaking within Africa. I shared this update with the Ghanaian media in February 2023, highlighting the fact that the current facilities are inadequate.

2022 UNESCO report reveals that while the Nigerian movie industry, which churns out approximately 2,500 films yearly with earnings in the hundreds of millions, is experiencing substantial growth, African film production faces obstacles like piracy, limited training resources, and scarcity of established film institutions.

Elba stated to the BBC that this field holds influence, not only within Ghana, but throughout Africa as a whole. With appropriate funding and facilities, African movie creators could counteract the colonial narratives about our continent typically portrayed by Western media.

“Elba stated that if you only watch movies or other media about Africa, they often portray nothing but trauma, slavery, colonialism, and conflict. However, he emphasized that when you actually visit Africa, you’ll find that this isn’t an accurate representation of the continent.

He continued: “It’s really important that we own those stories of our tradition, of our culture, of our languages, of the differences between one language and another. The world doesn’t know that.”

Beyond the realm of entertainment, Idris Elba has ambitions to establish an “eco-city” on Sherbro Island, a tropical location situated off the southwestern coast of Sierra Leone – his father’s birthplace. This initiative is spearheaded by Elba’s childhood friend Siaka Stevens, who shares the same name as a former prime minister of Sierra Leone and grandson to that prime minister. The project aims to introduce wind-powered renewable energy for the first time in that country.

In March, Elba shared with the BBC, “It’s more like a vision than reality, but I operate in the world of imagination.” He explained, “It’s about fostering independence, it’s about creating an economy that sustains itself and has room for expansion. I am deeply invested in shifting the perspective on Africa.
