The book chosen by Oprah Winfrey’s book club focuses on various topics such as love, loss, grief, the bond between mothers and daughters, and addiction. Riley explained that this book serves as an opportunity for Lisa Marie to express her personal experiences using her own voice and establish a connection with others.

Riley stated, “Prior to my mother’s addiction when I was 25, most people would agree that we led an exceptionally fortunate and beautiful life. However, I wouldn’t call it a tragedy. There was, and still is, so much more.

Additionally, although anecdotes such as Lisa Marie whizzing around Graceland in a golf cart or Keough truanting from school to spend time with her mother are abundantly described within the book, Keough stated that Lisa Marie wished to focus on exploring grief and the sorrow of losing her son in her writing.

In a candid manner, Riley chose to articulate her emotional journey of losing her brother to suicide, an experience that didn’t flow easily for her, but she felt compelled to do so knowing her mother wouldn’t have hesitated to discuss it. Lisa Marie expressed her intention behind writing about this tragic event as a means to pay tribute to her son by stimulating open and honest conversations surrounding suicide, substance abuse, and mental health issues.
