In a whiplash motion, all ten of the classic Star Trek movies are back on Paramount+
As a seasoned gamer who’s seen more streaming platforms than I care to remember, this latest twist with Star Trek movies returning to Paramount+ has left me scratching my virtual reality head. It feels like playing a game of cat and mouse, but instead of furry felines, we’ve got Hollywood studios and streaming services.
Call this a “we have no idea what’s going on” moment, but we just reported earlier this month. literally nine days ago, that all ten of the classic Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation movies had been removed from Paramount+. Now, they’ve made their way back to the streamer, making fans wonder what is happening.
Absolutely! It’s important to note that these films are accessible through MGM with a subscription. However, Paramount+ subscribers now have the convenience of watching their beloved classic movies directly on their platform, without the need to subscribe to an additional streaming service and thereby reduce the number of bills they manage.
It appears that the decision to pull these films from the streaming platform could be linked to the Skydance/Paramount merger. However, it seems more plausible that Paramount+ recognized the significant financial losses they were incurring by allowing the movies to stream elsewhere. The withdrawal of these films may have caused some subscribers to cancel their subscriptions out of frustration. Although this is speculation, it’s hard not to question the reasoning behind removing the films so quickly, only to bring them back a week later. After all, why take them off in the first place?
As a gamer, I agree with Trekmovie’s perspective. While it seems like physical media, such as DVDs and Blu-Rays, are becoming extinct, there’s something satisfying about having a collection that I can watch whenever I please without worrying about internet searches or additional subscription fees. However, accumulating all the movies and series could be quite an investment upfront. Nonetheless, I find comfort in owning something tangible rather than chasing after the ever-changing trends of streaming platforms like Paramount+.
