Henry Winkler reveals jaw-dropping payment he earned for starring in Adam Sandler's The Waterboy

As a lifestyle expert with a rich background in entertainment and celebrity insights, I find Henry Winkler’s story about his payment for The Waterboy to be both amusing and inspiring. Here we have an accomplished actor, who has worked tirelessly in the industry for decades, agreeing to work on a project at a moment’s notice, only to receive a “cookie” in return.

Henry Winkler recently disclosed the delightful compensation he received for unexpectedly joining Adam Sandler’s popular comedy film, The Waterboy.

78-year-old Happy Days veteran, who recently reconnected with his former co-star Ron Howard at the 2024 Emmy Awards, revealed on Kelly Ripa’s “Let’s Talk Off Camera” podcast that he was compensated merely with a ‘cookie’ when he stepped in at the eleventh hour after the initial actor dropped out.

1998’s hit movie featured Sandler portraying a 31-year-old, socially sheltered individual with a speech problem, whose mother was domineering and worked as a water carrier for the University of Louisiana’s football squad.

However, once the team and their mentor (portrayed by Winkler) find out he’s an almost invincible tackling force, he discards his pail and takes on the role of the team’s linebacker.

In simpler terms, ‘Waterboy’ was a role I took on, and Adam Sandler unexpectedly called me at night. He asked for a favor because his actor wasn’t present. He requested that I immediately drive to a park in Los Angeles, as he explained later in an interview with the New York Post.

In the late hours, around midnight, when Sandler called, it wasn’t an optimal moment for Winkler, but he remained enthusiastic and willing.

Winkler stated, “I leave, respond with ‘OK’, then shave, drive off again, take a seat and stay there until 3:30 am getting my makeup done. Can you guess what I received for all that effort? Just a cookie.

It appeared that Ripa was taken aback when he mentioned this, as she noted that they had collaborated again with Sandler on several projects, such as Little Nicky (2000), Click (2006), and You Don’t Mess With The Zohan (2008) in the years following.

But despite the alleged pittance of a payment, that didn’t deter the film and television star from working multiple times with Sandler.

Ripa asked if there wasn’t a Maserati for Henry Winkler, to which he responded that he didn’t even get to keep the outfits he wore on set.

Ripa continued pressing for details, trying to figure out the specific high-end vehicle Sandler could repay him with, however, Winkler showed no enthusiasm towards sports cars.

He humorously expressed that he doesn’t desire a Maserati, as getting in and out of such a low car would be challenging, and he wouldn’t have room for sleeping comfortably.

Instead, he said he would be perfectly happy with ‘the small version’ of a Lexus.

Winkler might not have been too concerned about the shaky payments, as he enjoyed working with Sandler so immensely.

Winkler adores the Uncut Gems actor; he’s just as you picture him to be. He’s unique, unconventional, devoted, comical, and full of wonder. He also possesses a powerful vision.

He mentioned that Sandler takes care of all aspects of the films he heads, although he’s only been given official credit as the director for just one music video.

‘There’s not a frame that gets by him. No matter what it is,’ Winkler continued, adding sweetly, ‘I love him and I respect him deeply.’

Yet, he couldn’t resist taking a final playful dig at the ex-Saturday Night Live actor, famed for his occasionally laid-back, unconventional attire.

‘I’m not crazy about the way he dresses,’ Winkler joked.
