What we'll miss when Star Trek Explorer releases its final issue in December

As a dedicated Star Trek enthusiast with over three decades of fandom under my belt, I must confess that the impending demise of Star Trek Explorer leaves me feeling like Captain Kirk facing the final frontier – not with excitement, but with a heavy heart. The magazine has been a faithful companion in my life’s journey through the galaxy, delivering insights and anecdotes that have enriched my understanding and appreciation of Star Trek.

On December 4, 2024, Star Trek Explorer will publish its last edition, marking the conclusion of thirty years of Star Trek Magazine. This announcement is far from delightful for devoted readers like us. Receiving the magazine in our mailbox and leisurely perusing its vibrant pages has always been a special experience, offering fresh insights into beloved Star Trek characters or stories from bygone eras.

It seems quite clear that when Star Trek Explorer comes to an end, there will be many aspects of it that we’ll dearly miss. The fact that certain unique details were exclusive to its pages really piques curiosity about how that hidden knowledge will be shared going forward.

The team executed an exceptional job, utilizing comprehensive interviews, exclusive Behind-the-Scenes glimpses, and archival data. Moreover, the remarkable science fiction authors who wrote tales that might not have been discovered otherwise are also part of this impressive collection. This leaves me wondering, where will these stories find a new home now?

Is it likely that another platform will provide us unique insights into Star Trek that can’t be found elsewhere? Yes, while we already feature a variety of content, such as our Exploring the Star Trek Universe section which provides updates on Star Trek at the time of publication, there has been one comprehensive source for all Star Trek-related information – Star Trek Explorer. Unfortunately, that will no longer be available, leaving a potential gap in our coverage of Star Trek.

What I’ll cherish the most are the interviews. The Star Trek Explorer provides an exceptional opportunity to delve deeper into the lives of those associated with Star Trek. It serves as a unique platform, granting us access to people we might not have encountered otherwise.

As a dedicated gamer and Star Trek fan, I’ve always looked forward to the closing segments of each issue, knowing it was like unlocking a treasure trove of behind-the-scenes knowledge from the Star Trek Explorer team. Though I can only cross my fingers and hope for its eventual return, I feel fortunate to have been a subscriber and reader through all these years, feasting on their hard work and dedication.
